Chancellor Angela Merkel won a landslide personal victory in a German election on Sunday, putting her within reach of the first absolute majority in parliament in half a century, a ringing endorsement of her steady leadership in the euro crisis.
Partial results put her conservative bloc - the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) -- on 42.5 percent, which if confirmed would be their strongest score since 1990, the year of German unification.
The outcome could give Merkel an edge of a few seats over the combined opposition in the Bundestag lower house for the first time since conservative Chancellor Konrad Adenauer achieved that feat in 1957. But she may still need a coalition partner for her third term when the final votes are counted.

But if the FDP doesn’t win 5% doesn’t that mean SDP is the coalition partner?
Germany has come a long way since the dark days of 1933-45. I wish them well and drink their beer.
Long way in what direction?
The “Osties” aren’t going to like this.
The right direction. Hitler embodied the extreme far left and it’s been a long road in the right direction since.
Are “Osties” from the east?
Yes. They still mostly are socialist.
Not sure I'd want to see Angela Merkel "romping" in my direction, though.
The term is "Ossies."
Regards,
German is track for a super-low 5% unemployment rate and >$200 billion trade SURPLUS.
Meanwhile, Spain, Portugal and Italy are at 15% unemployment.
In the Euro, the PIIGS pain is Merkel’s gain.
If Merkel has to join with the Socialist Party to form a coalition government, what, really, will have been won?
Merkel’s CDU Party is already center-left on its most “Conservative” day.
Mix in a couple Socialist ministers, and the unstoppable leftward drift of European politics will pick up speed for the next four years.
The German media said her opponent was closing fast and it was a dead heat. The German media probably gets its marching orders from our lame stream media.
“romps” to victory?
As far as I can figure, she was an East German. Probably from Brandenburg or Mechlenburg? I visited all of east Germany last year, they didn’t look like they were starving, and the Trabats are far and few between. Its a new country there. I’ve seen where there were barracks from the early 1900s converted to Condos and new shopping centers popping up everywhere. It shows progress, wish we had someone like that here.
Merkel is an Ossie, by the way.
Wow, a dictator won reelection. In other news, Hugo Chavez and Vladamir Putin have also have won elections.
