NPR to shed 10% of staff amid budget shortfall

US broadcast network National Public Radio plans to shed 10% of its staff in an effort to close a $6.1m (£3.8m) budget deficit, a spokeswoman has said.

It will offer voluntary redundancies to its roughly 840 employees.

The broadcaster put the budget shortfall in part down to a decline in corporate grants amid the slow US economy.

National Public Radio (NPR) reaches 27 million listeners a week through 975 member stations across the US.

The redundancies follow a series of shake-ups in the non-profit's leadership, and a 2008 reduction of about 8% of its staff.

NPR, based in Washington DC, receives about 2% of its annual budget from federal funds, with the rest from grants, licence fees from local affiliates, and listener donations.

I hate to see people loose their jobs.

But in this case I might make an exception.

Ray Krok’s wife gave them $200M in 2003. Guess it’s gone.

"...receives about 2% of its annual budget from federal funds"

That's all? Cut them off then- ANYONE can absorb a 2% hit

Wait... they wouldn't be LYING about that, would they?

“NPR’s gleaming new headquarters building in the shadow of the Capitol in Washington has soaring ceilings, a “wellness” center, an employee gym and a gourmet cafe staffed by a resident chef.

This, as it turns out, could be a political problem.

NPR showed off the 400,000-square-foot complex, which has been open since April....”

Unless you’re a communist, they could cut 95% and nobody would notice, or care.

Rush Limbaugh gets about 14 million listeners per week. I’m pretty sure his staff size is nowhere near 875.

“PR, based in Washington DC, receives about 2% of its annual budget from federal funds...”

Been seeing their numbers for years but every time the percentage goes down, they squawk more on how much they need it. Something doesn’t match up. Every time we want to defund NPR/PBS, the left goes as ballistic if we were proposing to put shards of broken glass in the nation’s KY Jelly supply.

Around here almost every car owned by a liberal has a license plate frame advertising the local PBS station, a bumper sticker with the “=” sign, an old 0bama-Biden bumper sticker, and a “Ready for Hillary 2016” bumper sticker. Sometimes I wish I were a seagull so that I could crap all over them.

The place I live - exurban Upstate New York - is covered by three or four separate NPR stations.

Of course, that was last time I checked... which was about ten years ago.

the irony is that NPR now has less left wing bias than the commercial networks (excl fox)

NPR covered stories this year that that were only later covered or ignored by CBSNBCABCCNN e.g. Delbert Belton murder

When Republicans cut all subsidies to NPR/PBS only then will I begin to take them seriously. Its a small matter in the overall scheme of things, but its very symbolic to me.

No more taxpayer money for the liberal propaganda machine!
