NPR to shed 10% of staff amid budget shortfall

US broadcast network National Public Radio plans to shed 10% of its staff in an effort to close a $6.1m (£3.8m) budget deficit, a spokeswoman has said.

It will offer voluntary redundancies to its roughly 840 employees.

The broadcaster put the budget shortfall in part down to a decline in corporate grants amid the slow US economy.

National Public Radio (NPR) reaches 27 million listeners a week through 975 member stations across the US.

The redundancies follow a series of shake-ups in the non-profit's leadership, and a 2008 reduction of about 8% of its staff.

NPR, based in Washington DC, receives about 2% of its annual budget from federal funds, with the rest from grants, licence fees from local affiliates, and listener donations.

The mainstream media will simply pick up the propaganda slack.

Hopefully they will get a free tote and a coffee mug on the way out...paid for with a generous grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

And from forced contributions from non-viewers like us....Thank you.

And yet they can pay their fired CEO a half million dollar severance.

I'm having Schadenfreude for all of them....

As I recall NPR costs something like 6 or 7 times the amount of money to operate than Fox news, ABC news, CBS news, etc etc. It’s just a corrupt purveyor of anti-freedom lies.

What are “voluntary redundancies”??

My guess is that they would ask people to take a severance package and leave; or, to take retirement early. But, that is just a guess.

That is a good thing in a way can you imagine the harm if they were using all their money as efficiently as FOX or the Blaze????

How much of “licence fees from local affiliates” are government funded? Grants to local stations to pay for NPR?

Rush Limbaugh gets about 14 million listeners per week. I’m pretty sure his staff size is nowhere near 875.

You don't need a staff of almost 1,000 when you present facts. DUmmies need that many to cover up their lies.

They get 50% of their funding from our tax money. They’d be out of business without it.

“Redundancies” in a nutshell is a British term for layoffs, buyouts and early retirements.

he irony is that NPR now has less left wing bias than the commercial networks (excl fox)

NPR covered stories this year that that were only later covered or ignored by CBSNBCABCCNN e.g. Delbert Belton murder.

Also the pipeline of jihadis from Minneapolis to Somalia.

You can't listen to any program longer than an hour there without hearing something about gays.

Maybe the homo left needs to pony up some more chump change to back their mouthpiece.
