Commentary: A Horrifying and Lethal Case of Boredom
BET ^ | August 21, 2013 | Jonathan P. Hicks

Beyond that, it is yet another painful sign of how gun violence has become far too rampant in America and access to firearms has become far too effortless. Anyone with determination — including teenagers — can get a hold of a semi-automatic firearm as easily as buying hand sanitizer in a drug store.

Moreover, there is something so deeply amiss in a world where teenagers shoot and kill passersby simply to deal with their sense of boredom. For many, that was the void once filled by sports, the arts, pastimes and hobbies — even television. This sad incident in Oklahoma should remind the nation of the need for more homes to benefit from the presence of mentors who can provide guidance to a generation of young people for whom such models are painfully absent.

Instead of straining to make this a racial incident and indictment of the civil rights leaders, this event should be looked at squarely as an example of how the nation’s porous and lax gun laws have intersected with a deep-seated cultural void to produce young people with a lack of character and basic human decency.

Instead of straining to make this a racial incident ...

Young black men -- 3% of the population -- commit 50% of the murders in this society.

It's racial, and your negro culture has a lot of fixing up to do. Don't bother to tell me what I need to change about myself. I'm not the problem. Negroes are.

The crime that nobody dares to mention.
Blacks need to held accountable for their actions. Instead they are coddled.
Shame on their leaders.

Lets go back to open carry and be done with it. More people are dying per capita now than in the “wild” west heyday. We need to defend ourselves, carrying a .45 on you hip will keep the bad ones at bay. At least you can return fire...

Not if you're shot in the back from a passing car.

So is black on black, every day here in New York city I read about another black person killing another black, every-single-day. There is not a day that goes by where it doesn’t happen. Today it’s a black guy killing a black transgender, he just beat her/him to death. Then a 3 year black kid was shot in the head by another black. Every day they kill each other.

Black on black murder has been going on for decades and liberals still refuse to acknowledge there is a problem in the black community. If the murder is done with a gun, it’s the NRAs fault. If it’s done with a knife it’s a “setup” by whitey. Every freakin’ excuse you can imagine.

Uh, how about fathers? Maybe more homes could benefit from the presence of fathers who can provide guidance to a generation of young people for whom such fathers are painfully absent. I like how the writer equates raising children to a voluntary position. It is, I suppose. But it should not be.

It’s NOT the gun - it’s the hands of the person holding it...

Something very sick within the black culture...

What a pile o' glop. What would this dope's argument be if the "teens" had used flashlights, as in the murder of 88-year old war hero Delbert Benton? Or gasoline as in the recent murder in Memphis (one of the suspects in the Memphis case is 26, but we'll stick to the media meme and call him a "teen" too)?

Making this about guns is pathetic. He should instead focus on the "deep-seated cultural void" in the black family unit brought about by the ever-growing welfare state and moral rot in our popular culture as fostered by liberalism.
