There are about 200,000 registered machine guns that may be lawfully purchased. About one per thousand adult citizens. this lack of supply means that a 30-year-old version of a gun that would cost $1000 if new costs maybe $15,000.

As the generations pass, those tolerably modern guns will become more and more obsolete compared to the millions of machine guns carried by the standing army of military, law enforcement, and regulatory agencies.

These are the arms most clearly protected by the second amendment.
