Vermont authorities have determined that the June 16 shooting death of a Hudson Falls man who was killed as he was stabbing his ex-girlfriend at a home in western Vermont was "justifiable homicide" and no charges will be filed.
Vermont State Police announced Friday night that the man who shot 29-year-old Aaron Allen as he stabbed his former girlfriend at her home in Danby, Vt., was "legally justified" to take action as she was attacked.
Michael White, 24, of Danby, Vt., shot Allen twice with a .30-06-caliber rifle, and Allen died the next day at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vt. The woman was attacked, Heather Thompson, 22, survived several knife wounds and was expected to make a full recovery.
Police said White was defending Thompson, himself and their residence on John Corey Road when he used deadly physical force.

Had my 1942 Johnson at the range today... yep, the 30.06 is loud and effective...
You own a Johnson!!!!I would think it would be too valuable to shoot.
Ummmm..... ‘cuz I am?
And once again reality bears out that old saw: "don't bring a knife to a gunfight...!"
LOL... you sound like my friend who shoots with me... he always gives me heck when I shoot the Johnson... I don’t put many rounds through it but any gun I have I like to shoot... :)
You can be sure that nobody in that room when the ‘06 was fired could hear anything for hours.
“You can be sure that nobody in that room when the 06 was fired could hear anything for hours.”
One of them still can’t.
Could be he was aiming to make sure that he didn’t hit the victim
Actually it is not 30 odd 6, it is 30 ought 6. Ought being the way, back in the day, of saying zero. There fore the .30-06, meant a 30 caliber made in 1906, or 19Ought6.Taught to me back in the day by my mother who used the term ought right up until the day she died. You are correct is finding it odd that the guy lived for a while after being shot twice with one.
Correction on my last comment Ought should be spelled aught. Senior moment I guess:)
Actually, the standard load for 150grn in an 06 is 2970 fps. A .308 clocks in at 2860. There are some newer rounds that will turn in closer to 3100 in the 06. The original loading, however, for the military back in 03 and 06(the .30-03 preceded the .30-06)was 2700 fps. Now days the 180grn clocks in at 2700 or around there.
Sorry to be nitpicky, a bad habit of mine.
“Could be he was aiming to make sure that he didnt hit the victim”
Yes. He likely had to be very careful with the shots.
Perhaps. If one gets lucky. But larger and heavier calibers are recommended. Try .338mag for starters. Or .375 H & H.
'06 should be enough for most black bears, though. Brown bears can get about 3x bigger.

Grey, me thinks you are ready for “prime time”.
Yeah. Must have had FMJ or just missed the vitals.
Back before the animals all got body armor, the old '06 was plenty big medicine. My brother killed everything in Alaska with one, my Dad used the .308.
I got caught up in the magnum craze. 308 Norma Mag, 350 Rem mag, even a 458Win. Even had a 338 mag. Hated it! Sold it back to the feller I bought it from.
Then, I bought a .280 Rem. For the first time in years, I really enjoyed shooting, I could even see the muzzle blast through the scope. I didn't need a spotter to tell me where I hit, I could see the bullet make a hole in the target! The "06 is enough gun for ANYTHING on the North American continent. Shot placement is everything.
He may not have been trying to kill, just stop the attack.
