Woodland Park parents stand up against national education standards (Common Core: CO)
Colorado Springs Gazette ^ | August 8, 2013 | Carol McGraw

A group of Woodland Park parents and educators want to get rid of the Common Core Academic Standards that are being implemented in Colorado Schools.

Teller County Citizens Against Common Core Standards maintains the new academic guidelines aren't as good as the ones in place. It also argues that the system is unconstitutional because it takes local control away from school districts.

It may lobby Woodland Park School District RE-2 and the state to drop out.

"We want to get the word out. The standards were just a money carrot for the state to get federal money,"

...

Among other things, critics say that classic literature and certain math subjects are being left out of the core standards.

...

Four states have refused the alignment. Last month, Douglas County School Board in suburban Denver adopted a resolution to oppose the standards in favor of its own, which they consider superior

Common Core is only Leftist indoctrination. The Classics in Literature are replaced with ‘informational text’ such as Obama’s Executive Orders and Directives from the EPA. This will supposedly teach our children how to write to be understood. This Regime is slowly destroying our National Identity in favor of Marxism. This Government uses it's might to create ‘fairness’ in every aspect of our lives. Make no mistake, Conservatives/Republicans will not be getting any health care (as soon as single-payer is implemented), any tax exempt status, etc., for the next four years. I fear by 2016, it will be too late to resurrect the country.

I don’t care what education standards are imposed.

The motivated smart kids always will succeed, and the loser idiot kids always will fail regardless of what system is in place. That was the case 100 years ago, and is so today. The idea that every kid must be educated and meet certain standards is absurd.

Are homeschooling parents upset about this?

Common Core national standards will set our children back one to two years. The math standards specifically are markedly inferior to all three sets of standards used for comparison .

So what is missing in the new Common Core Math Standards? A few examples:

• Probability — gone in elementary grades.

• Mean, median, mode, and range — gone in elementary grades.

• The concept of pi, including area and circumference of circles – gone in elementary grades.

• Division of a fraction by a fraction – gone in elementary grades.

• The Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic (prime factorization) – gone completely.

• Using fractions, decimals, and percents interchangeably — gone completely.

• Measurement (including density, velocity, and scientific notation) – no measurement instruction after 5th grade.

• Algebra — inadequate readiness in the elementary grades and pushed back one year (from middle school – 8th grade – to high school – 9th grade). This means most students will not reach calculus in high school, as expected by selective universities. And because algebra is the gateway to higher mathematics, Common Core’s approach reduces the likelihood that students will be prepared for university-level math.

I’ve never seen anything in the Constitution that authorizes the feral government to have anything to do with education.

Common Core has a core goal, to make certain that all American students who graduate are not very bright. Sounds like a rotten apple to me.

This is something I don't understand. I took Algebra in 9th grade, Geometry in 10th and Trig in 11th. Calclus was an elective And I never heard of AlgebraII.

‘Really Spooky’ Poem Praising Common Core Allegedly Recited by Dozens of 5th Graders

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3053007/posts

You really need to HEAR Beck and Stu perform this. It is worse than the Obama kids mentioned in post 11, because it is giving glory (worship, Kudos) to the curriculum, not a person, such as Obama.

Were 5th graders forced to recite “We learn more with common core!” poem?

Your post has no basis in fact. None of the cited examples of topics dropped by common core curriculum are correct. Take it from a math teacher in a Coloradopublic school. The amount of false information out there about common core standards is incredible. Please be sure of your sources.

OK, let's move beyond assertion to proof with citations and links, if possible. I'm personally of two minds about this but I'm skeptical of anything where the feds are using a money carrot to accelerate implementation. Since your area is math, some direct comparisons of math skills taught by grade level using the previous curriculum and instructional plans with those under Common Core would interest me.

I would recommend reading at ccsstoolbox.com and corestandards.org, where the new standards are laid out quite plainly. It’s not the work of the devil or some grand communist plot I assure you.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The Truth about Common Core (Bill Ayers).

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3004960/posts

Self admitted Terrorist Bill Ayers and Obama’s Federal School Curriculum. As a terrorist, he and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, had dedicated their Prairie Fire Manifesto to Sirhan Sirhan, the convicted assassin of Robert F. Kennedy.

Common Core is part of an effort to implement regionalism, the replacement of local governments by regional boards of federally appointed bureaucrats, who in turn are beholden to international bodies. Regionalism will eliminate the freedom parents now have in choosing neighborhoods with good schools because tax funds will be distributed equally.

There will be no escape in home schooling or private schools either, because the curriculum will follow national tests. Students will be tracked through mandatory state records that will then be accessible to Washington bureaucrats. Ultimately, all students will be subject to education mandates implemented by Obama’s radical cronies.

On the recommendation of Benito Cerreno, I went to read the CC standards @ commoncore.org and I’m finding your assertions about what is missing to be questionable and worth further investigation. CC may be out of line when it is used as a cudgel by the Dept of Ed for financing and that is a worthy discussion without starting from unfounded information on the actual curriculum.

‘who in turn are beholden to international bodies’

Standards in Medicine are also being implemented to come into line with International requirements. I work in a very large National type laboratory. We are having to bring our workplace into compliance with standards that originate in Switzerland. Obamacare will bring our medical care level down to the same level as European Socialist medicine. Americans will NOT BE AMUSED. Our medical system was the best. It is rapidly being dismantled and, when Americans wake up and realize what is happening, it will be waaaaaay too late. It is already too late for many areas of medicine. More's the pity. This is what will happen with Nationalized education. STATES RIGHTS, PLEASE!
