No matter how many guns they had in the car there would be a 0% chance of those guns still being there when the paramedics get there. They almost certainly threatened him and could very easily have had a gun. If I'm reading the story correctly it's the shooter, Dunn, who drove off and not the kids in the car he shot up. They stayed and police found no weapons in the vehicle afterwards. So Dunn shot a kid because he didn't like his music.

How far they got, and how quickly they returned to the crime scene, AND what they did in the interim are what is not proven at this point.
