Nine months after the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a White man has killed another Florida teen under troubling circumstances.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that on Friday night, 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis and a group of friends were sitting in an SUV in the parking lot of a Jacksonville convenience store when they were approached by another vehicle. Michael David Dunn, who was accompanied by his girlfriend, asked the teens to turn down their music.
According to Lt. Rob Schoonover of the Jacksonville Sherrif's Office, Davis and Dunn exchanged words. Allegedly, the 45-year-old then drew a gun and fired into the SUV eight or nine times, striking the young boy twice. He then drove off, but a witness inside the store wrote down his license plate number.
The following morning, the couple learned that one of the passengers of the car had died via a news report. They then returned home to Brevard County, where Dunn was arrested later that day and charged with murder and attempted murder.
Jordan Russell Davis was a student at Samuel W. Wolfson High School, a magnet school. He worked at the local Wynn Dixie grocery store. Frankly, I would not care if he was a member of Three Six Mafia who had stopped at the convenience store to re-up on blunts and 40 ounces. If a group of people is sitting in a car listening to loud music, it is not the job of a private citizen to demand that they turn it down. Furthermore, there is nothing justifiable or excusable about Dunn drawing a gun on a group of people whom he had accosted.
Michael David Dunn, likely high off the excitement of his sons wedding, perhaps a few too many gin and tonics at the reception and certainly the feeling one gets from being White, male and armed, felt it was his place to approach these young people aggressively over the volume of their music.
And this gun wielding person, who allegedly APPROACHED THE CAR without provocation (much like George Zimmerman hunted down Trayvon Martin without provocation), felt threatened by the presence of teenagers in a car with whom he started an argument because HE THOUGHT THEIR MUSIC WAS TOO LOUD.
White privilege is just so, so real.
Dunns daughter has come forward to defend her father as a good person. While we all make mistakes, Im inclined to say that picking an argument with a car full of teenagers and then shooting into the vehicle is the first step a good person makes off of the path of righteousness. Im inclined to assume that the gun collector wasnt a big fan of young Black men and had probably done other non-good person things before.
The shooters lawyer, Robin Lemonidis, originally stated that her client was not guilty and had acted responsibly, adding that the full story had not yet been made public. A report late Tuesday night included claims that Dunn had seen a gun. While he certainly is entitled to his day in court why was the gun claim not made until two days after he was arrested? Why didnt he turn himself in if he felt hed done nothing wrong? Where was the good person his daughter swears he is then?
Dunn harassed a car full of young people, shot into the car and drove away. Upon learning that someone had died, he fled town and waited for the police to come find him. The only bit of hope here is that there was a car full of witnesses, in addition to the people in and around the store who saw the incident.
Alas, in a country that is dealing with increased racial tensions and the insane paranoia of White men who seem to feel that their country has been stolen by a burgeoning minority population and a Black president who won the popular vote, it seems inevitable that we will hear more stories like this. And as a community that has been ravaged by not only external abuse, but our own inability to get any sort of handle on our issues with Black-on-Black violence, one cant help but to feel like we are stuck in a sense of perpetual outrage, grief and trauma.
And so Jordan joins Trayvon as one of many, many Black boys and girls to be felled by senseless violence. Death by White hands, death by Black ones one thing seems to remain constant: our lives simply do not matter enough to be protected. We march, we pray, we cry and still, we die for no reason.
When does it end?
Yes, but I believe that recollection materialized after he made his first statement.
The car with the teens did drive some distance away from the scene, ostensibly to get away from the gun-wielding cracker, but any weapon could possibly have been discarded then.
Unless one of them has weapons offenses or violent offenses on his record or there are witnesses to testify that at least one of them owned such a weapon, this will be pretty impeachable.
For every incident such as this, there are easily over a dozen where the shooter and the vicitm were black. Where is this writer's hand-wringing over that?
First, no, nothing like Trayvon.
Second, the guy drove off. This means the occupants of the car were in complete control of the crime scene. No matter how many guns they had in the car there would be a 0% chance of those guns still being there when the paramedics get there. They almost certainly threatened him and could very easily have had a gun.
Good question, and since murders are reported, the answer could be learned. A quick search turned up a 183 page report which contains the following for the last year reported, 2005:
White on White 44.6% (of all Homicides in the US)
Black on White 8.8%
Other on White .3%
White on Black 3.2%
Black on Black 42.2%
Other on Black .0%
White on Other .2%
Black on Other .2%
Other on Other .5%
I’d be shocked if data for the years from 2005 til present shows any kind of significant difference.
Over the past 30 years, the rate of White-on-White has been decreasing, the rate of Black-on-Black seems to fluctuate both up and down, but the rate of Black-on-White has gone up by 3% while the rate of White-on-Black murder has gone up by only 1%.
The entire report can be found here:

Of course Zimmerman had reason to fear for his life, he was being assaulted with a deadly weapon. Beating someone’s head with concrete is assault with a deadly weapon.
Are you ever right that, when it comes to playing LOUD music. It's the bass that drives me crazy. Seems I can hear it for miles, for some reason.
The State of Florida Prosecutor’s office also COVERED UP that Travon Martin had kiddie porn on his cell phone, as well as pics of him menacingly holding a handgun. But, their IT guy testified to the truth, and was then FIRED for that!!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News has obtained new video of Michael Dunn speaking with police less than 24 hours after Jordan Davis was shot and killed at a gas station in November.
“I’ve never been so scared in my life,” Dunn tells police in the video. He insists he wasn’t looking for a fight when he pulled next to the teen’s SUV. Dunn says he was on his way to a Jacksonville hotel after his son’s wedding in Orange Park.
[AUDIO: WITNESSES REACT TO 911 CALL]
“Their music starts and I roll down my window, and I thought I was polite, and asked them nicely, hey would you guys mind turning that down?”
Dunn says the teens did at first, but through a closed window, he could tell one of them was upset. That’s when he says things started to heat up.
“I thought they were singing, but [then they said] you’re going to die [expletive removed]. Then it started getting a little louder. That’s when I popped my window down and was like, ‘You’re talking about me?’ And they was like you’re dead. You’re dead [expletive removed]!”
Dunn says he thought one of the teens had a shotgun.
“It was either a barrel or a stick but, sir, they’re like we’re going to kill you and then they said, ‘you’re dead [expletive removed].’ What I should have done was put the car in reverse, but that shotgun come up or whatever it was - fight or flight - and I don’t think there was time for flight at that moment because I was going to get shot.”
Dunn says he grabbed his gun from his glove box and shot at the SUV four times. As the teens drove away, he says he fired four more times. Then, he and his girlfriend drove to their hotel and ordered pizza. The next day, they drove to his home in south Florida.
Police asked why he didn’t call them right away.
“I wanted to come back to my hometown to do that - with our dog and everybody - where they needed to be. I didn’t want to bring a [expletive removed] storm in Jacksonville.”
Michael Dunn’s bond was denied in March. He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the research and the link.
yup, Just like Martin-Zimmerman case, let the system work it out. I guess anytime a white man kills a negro it’s a national tragedy now but strange that we never hear Anderson Cooper commenting on a group of black teenagers setting a white child on fire, or beating a white man to death in a friendly little game of “knockout” or “polar bear hunting” or whatever those little black angels call their race violence these days. I’m not sorry to say, my giveashitometer is stuck on zero these days.
Given the ghetto ethos of no snitchin, I'd have to agree with you.
Best to avoid any contact with young blacks in public; any interaction could lead to your possible maiming/death or lifetime incarceration.
Sure, you may miss out on all the witty, pleasant banter, but alas...
You probably would too, if someone was shooting at you.
This means the occupants of the car were in complete control of the crime scene.
Not really. What choice did they have but to flee? Their vehicle was only part of the crime scene.
Dunn left the scene as well.
No matter how many guns they had in the car there would be a 0% chance of those guns still being there when the paramedics get there.
Completely unknowable without further evidence.
They almost certainly threatened him
There is a difference between verbal threats and a threatening someone with a weapon.
and could very easily have had a gun.
And could very easily not have one either.
Firing into a fleeing vehicle will finish this guy.
As will his decision not to come forward until he was arrested.
Couldn’t tell in which category Hispanics are from the report.
This is not ‘another trayvon’ incident.
Since the stereo in my vehicle cannot compete db-wise with the very expensive sound systems that can make driving a living hell, I don’t even try. Instead, I egg them on. Hollering “Louder! LOUDER!” and making hand gestures indicating a desire for the sound level to be increased while grinning amiably can sometimes have positive side effects. Long term, possible deafness for these auditory miscreants, and on one memorable occasion, I goaded them into turning the volume so high it blew their speakers. My ears buzzed for two days, but it was worth it.
This guy is MUCH different then Zimmerman IF the story is complete.
I spose it depends on whether they are White Hispanics or Other Hispanics ;-) But seriously, just based on the numbers, I’d be certain that Hispanics are in the “white” category in this report. The “Other” category is so small that it wouldn’t be credible to think Hispanic crime was included there.
But the point is, shouldn’t a “media” that is doing it’s job have spend the same 10 minutes and informed it’s audience about the relative incidence of white-on-black murder?
If I'm reading the story correctly it's the shooter, Dunn, who drove off and not the kids in the car he shot up. They stayed and police found no weapons in the vehicle afterwards. So Dunn shot a kid because he didn't like his music.
