Cheerios Commercial: Racist Slurs Force YouTube to Close Comments Section for New Ad (VIDEO)
The Christian Post ^ | May 31, 2013 | Jon Campbell

A Cheerios commercial has sparked controversy after a large group of people started posting racially charged messages about the new ad on YouTube.

The commercial features an interracial couple and their daughter, and was released by Cheerios on YouTube. However, a group of Internet "trolls" quickly began posting comments about the interracial nature of the ad, sparking such racially charged comments that YouTube eventually decided to close the comments section of the page to bring a halt to the discussion.

The 30 second commercial features a young girl talking about the nutritional value of Cheerios. She asks her mom whether Cheerios are good for your heart, to which the mother responds that they are.

The young girl then smiles and runs off with the box of Cheerios. The next shot is of the girl's father waking up on the couch with a pile of Cheerios poured out over the left side of his chest where his heart is.

The commercial seems cute and innocent to most, but a number of Internet trolls quickly took over the discussion on the YouTube comments board referring to the interracial nature of the family, which featured a white mother and black father.

Some of the comments referred to "Nazis" and "racial genocide" and more than 600 dislikes were recorded for the video. Others commented that the concept of a happy mixed-race family made them "want to vomit."

The racial slurs also spilled over onto the Cheerios Facebook page where some commenters stated that they found the commercial "disgusting."

One commenter also posted a racial slur about the likelihood of black men staying with their family, stating: "More like single parent in the making. Black dad will dip out soon."

On Reddit the comments continued, and some turned the debate into the likelihood of a black man being with a white woman, against a couple with a white man and a black woman.

In 2012, a Cheerios commercial was also targeted by racial slurs and comments. In that commercial released in June last year, two black siblings are shown at their family kitchen table, when the older brother steals the cereal from his younger brother, who is in a high chair.

One commenter on YouTube wrote: "Just goes to show you they start steeling [sic] at an early age!!! First Cheerio's next bikes then cares lol just like in real life."

And General Mills is crying all the way to the bank because of the free publicity.

Not exactly.

It cost them a case of cereal for each 'commenter', and a lifetime supply of cereal for each 'negative' commenter.

It’s not just upto you to value marriage. Your generation has had its time. You are lucky if you found someone sharing your values.

The 80+ percent of 18-year olds who have indulged in premarital sex (sex after three dates is more-or-less a norm) failed to value it. The remainder have a chance. And for how long? A decent career takes at least until age 25 to stabilise. What are your chances of finding someone who upholds the value of marriage, by then? Exceptions exist, but the norm trends towards the meaninglessness and futility in betting on a stable marriage for such a generation.

Those born past 1990 are going to face the brunt of this changed social dynamics. I doubt they have the fortitude to fare well in the upcoming chaos.

I’m not expecting to be a one man society changer; and God has made clear that He is the important One anyhow. Now it may be that once more deeply invested in God, then God’s people will succeed in sharing a transformation out of evil with society. America was fortunate to have gospel roots. Australia did too, at one time. But the world’s inexorable response to the gospel is eventually, “we don’t want it. We are doing just fine on our own philosophies and you old fuddy duddies can go away.”

That’s a cute ad, but some people are always on the lookout for something to be offended about.

Smart of the little girl to find a way to avoid having to eat the Cheerios. Not sure how long 'mom' is going to like cleaning up Cheerios off the sheets.

How dare they imply that 'dad' is going to be the one to have a heart attack. (was he black or white or asian or what?). Another case of women trying to prove their superiority by showing that men are stupid and prone to early heart attacks.

(/sarcasm over)

It would make much more sense and be much better marketing if the dad were Euro and the mom were Africo. The fact that it’s the other way shows that the ad agency is racist, as are the drones at GF who approved the ad.

Thanks James C. Bennett.

...which featured a white mother and black father.

Was she as 'white' as George Zimmerman ?

...and then the world wrecks itself, and if there is yet an opportunity, the gospel beauty shows itself once more. God has not yet tired of trying, but at some point the show will be called to a close.

Like they don’t want the white to be in the “power” position. The world is so tied up in phobias that it would be hilarious if it wasn’t tragic for being heart-attack real.

or were they hoping for controversy which could then be denounced as racist?

Only because the controversy would sell more cereal. It's about money, not racism.

What is it they say?.... the only bad publicity is no publicity.

“The internet. That is all. Case closed.”

Ummmm....

This (FR) is also the Internet.

The Internet is like water. Drink from the wrong source and you can get cholera. From the right source and it can be very refreshing & useful.

If uncertain, filter first.

Or why men are constantly ridiculed in ads. A car ad currently aired shows where a woman who slaps a man across the face. Imagine a man slapping a woman? There is one playing now for a hotel chain in which a man is home in curlers while his wife is on a business trip. About five years, a hotel discount website showed two white guys blowing bubbles through a straw/hose while a black guy was bathing— the point of the ad was not to get fooled by online hotel discount sites that would call that a spa; however, how would the ad have aired if the races where switched? And then there are the Progressive Insurance ads. I seem to remember one ad where a woman used a scissors through a computer graphic to cut her man’s private parts because she saw him talking to a woman in a bar via a web cam.

“the country was 30% black people.”

Since Obama’s election the percentage of “black” appearing people has dropped while the percentage of light skinned, mixed race actors has increase considerably.

State Farm does have Dennis Haysbert, but every time I see him I am reminded of this scene:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJQ0IpkZVhc

Unfortunately, the dialogue is in Spanish on this clip.

Haysbert’s character ends up lying on the floor with the hyperdermic in his neck and whispers “Mercy!”

Eastwood’s “Luther Whitney” says, “I’m fresh out.”

For all I know, Dennis Haysbert is a great guy. But his face is associated with that scene in my mind.

I’m not going to try to define anything here because to do so would be racist /s

That one has difficulty mentally categorizing race shows nothing as far as the actual existence of it as a phenomenon of Nature.

I've seen the ad with the husband wearing curlers--just weird.

I haven't seen the Progressive ad you mention--whenever one starts to come on I immediately switch channels. I started doing that several years ago when they had one of their earliest ads with "Flo" which featured a couple of young men acting as "flaming" homosexuals (whether the actors really were, I have no idea). Plus the owner is a rabid leftist.

I can't stand Allstate ads either...

Some of the older Aflac ads were good, but after seeing them 100 times they get stale...

I agree with the Allstate ads and more so any ad for prescription medications especially those that seem to last two minutes. Click! The Progressive ad (IIRC) was from a few years ago and prior to Flo. About the only ads I enjoy are those featuring the “Most interesting man in the world...”

I only read through half the comments here, but maybe I’m the only one to think that black women might be very bitter about black men marrying white women, and have some motivation for hostility (with the added bonus of it looking like blacks are still the victim of racism.)
