I remember the Navy midrats, the favorite meal of the day. The meal usually consisted of leftovers plus eggs to order, SOS, left over deserts all manner of good stuff. Most Navy chow halls put out pretty good chow. I do hate to see the Jarheads suffer for no apparent reason, morale will go in the tank.

As a platoon leader, company commander and later Provost Marshal, I was usually too occupied to ever really worry about what kind of food I was getting; coffee and tobacco usually filled the bill, BUT, I never lost sight of the fact that the soldiers actually doing the heavy lifting placed a high priority on chow, and I always worked to get them the best that the mission would allow.

Even as a pre-commissioning cadet being prepared for leadership positions, we had a crusty old LTC who had a saying that "Morale was spelled with four M's":

Money - soldiers needed to get paid on time and the chain of command needed to move mountains to resolve any pay problems ASAP.

Mail - Mail call should be held as regularly and as efficiently as the mission allowed. I imagine this has changed somewhat in the days of email and skype, but the same principle would apply with access to same.

Meals - Best food available as regularly and efficiently as the mission allowed.

Ms/Mrs/Mr - You don't screw with a soldier's date/spouse/BF or GF. Doing so is just asking for bad news.

Take care of the soldiers' four M's, and they'll take care of you.
