Seven police commandoes have been killed in a bomb and gun attack by communist rebels in the northern Philippines, officials say. Rebels from the New People's Army (NPA) ambushed the group as they made their way to a medical exam.
Their truck was hit by an explosion, after which the militants opened fire, police said. Seven other commandoes were also injured in the attack. The incident took place near Allacapan, 400km (250 miles) north of Manila.
Those who died were members of an elite counter-insurgency police unit, reports said. The NPA has been fighting for a communist state for more than four decades. One of Asia's longest-running insurgencies, the group concentrates its campaign in rural areas and in small-scale skirmishes with the military.
A recent push for peace talks collapsed earlier this year. The group is listed on the Foreign Terrorist Organisation list of the US State Department.

Even the Chinese communists don’t believe in Mao anymore...how can these people be getting traction?
Yeah, same thing in India, “Maoists” . Where do these guys get funding from?
Have heard nothing about it, but my TV news is just now on (8 PM).
Waiting to see if it is covered.
I thought the only problem was down on Mindanao.
Guess I was wrong.
You don't need to believe in Mao. You just need a sponsor willing to give you money in exchange for running a Maoist insurgency. China has designs on Philippine territory, specifically the Spratly Islands
If you remember...it was the Maoist guys who started up Shining Path in Peru decades ago, and created a huge mess.
There’s probably even Maoists in the US today.
The clunker always looks better on the lot.
Mao is without doubt, the biggest mass murderer in history.
35 million of his own people starved and murdered in the “Great Leap Forward.”
Like I said, it looks better on the lot. In fact, "Forward" still attracts a crowd.
Amazing coincidence...
Wow!
They have the Maoists up in the north and the Muzzies in the south to deal with!
RIP.
