Memorial Day 2013

Posted on 05/23/2013 7:38:36 AM PDT by Terry L Smith

Memorial Day, 2013.

The year is 2013. 337 years after we declared our independence from the reigning monarchy of Great Britain.

What are we memorializing this government-sanctioned three day weekend, which was precisely at one time, May 30th, the actual date?

Are we memorializing our war dead, specifically those Unknown Soldiers, who died defending what today might be looked upon by many, as our 'lost rights'? Are we memorializing those that died, who believed that America, in their time on Earth, was 'the land of the free, and the home of the brave'?

Or, are we, now, memorializing car purchase sales, mattress sales, department store and supermarket sales, cable television broadcast marathons of Hollywood drug-induced ideas of what past wars might have been envisioned to be, soft and hard drink purchases, and, of course, the ever-present barbeques?

How can we, in good conscience and clarity of mind, memorialize American military war dead, who fought for Freedom, when it is we same Americans, who have elected municipal mayors, state legislature members, U.S. Congressmen and U.S. Senators, and a sitting U.S. President, who are all not in the business of keeping America free, but have been in the business of passing subjugating laws and executive orders, designed to either limit or take away Americans' freedoms?

Are these NOT the very same freedoms that were bought and paid for, with the very blood and bodies of the war dead, that we habitually memorialize this one day out of each passing year?

In fact, I say, "How dare we?" As we do, we have become hypocrites to our own ideals.

Once in a time past, my best friend, Andrew Chowka, Pvt. U.S.M.C., stood in a field far away, fighting a Communist aggressor. In that field, as he moved through it, on patrol, he stepped on the initiator of a Bouncing Betty land mine. He was no more. The year was 1969. His remains are in Arlington. His name is on "The Wall". He died fighting Communist aggression.

Today, we have a sitting u.S. president, who is an avowed Communist. We have members of both the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Senate who are publicly listed members of the u.S. Democratic Socialist Party.

Again, I ask, "How dare we?"

Which panel of the Wall? I want to add it to my visit-list when the Traveling Wall makes it’s annual local appearance. May Andrew Chowka Rest In Peace.

It was surely a pleasant/unexpected surprise.

But I'm not getting the big brown whatever being held over the boy's back, as the GI's duffel is on the ground next to them.

Wierd. When I type in ‘google.com’, it defaults me to ‘google.ca’, where there is a Mountie saluting. When I try again to type in ‘google.com’, it continues to default to ‘google.ca’. When I click the link to ‘google.com’, it takes me there, but there is no image or anything to suggest anything about Memorial Day. I assume that the display of a graphic is automatically determined by the ‘home’ server of the person viewing the site. I guess that the PC types running Google must think that ‘furreners’ would be insulted by seeing even the slightest nod to patriotism on a US website.

Thank you for the exact reference. I have always known it was the 1969 year section. Knowing his name “made it”, was enough for me. Since there have been many miles and years, when The Travelling Wall came to where I lived at the time, imagine all the dread, as I sat there, comparing my high school yearbook, with the catalogue of listed names. Andy died the year before I stood up, and took The Oath.

Thank you. I think Terry would want to know too. I hope you'll tell us all about it.
