Republicans pull plug on Mark Sanford
Politico ^ | April 17th, 2013 | Alex Isenstadt

National Republicans are pulling the plug on Mark Sanford’s suddenly besieged congressional campaign, POLITICO has learned — a potentially fatal blow to the former South Carolina governor’s dramatic comeback bid.

Blindsided by news that Sanford’s ex-wife has accused him of trespassing and concluding he has no plausible path to victory, the National Republican Congressional Committee has decided not to spend more money on Sanford’s behalf ahead of the May 7 special election.

They should have thought about that beforehand.

We had not one but two chances to send this guy packing during the primaries. The people in my district FAILED to do so!

No one needs a mentally ill idiot who is a ticking time bomb. If he wins, he will probably do something so damaging, that it could damage the GOP in South Carolina for a generation. Do you really think it will help Republicans when it come out he molested kids or he negotiates an agreement with Ahmadinejad?

I seem to remember Sanford being trashed here before the affair. He was always a tepid conservative, but his wife told him what to do. Now that she is gone he is an out and out leftist. He needed his wife because he has an IQ of about 60 and he's a weirdo who doesn't know how to act like a human being.

Maybe his wife could run for the seat instead, wouldn’t that be delicious?

You do realize that he won the GOP primary? What does that say about South Carolina Republicans?

It says South Carolina "values voters" in the 1st Congressional district are idiots. Sanford not only won the original primary, he went on to win the runoff. This is an R+11 bible belt(ish) district, and this is who they nominate. Can't blame the "establishment" for this one. The people in this district bought Sanford's redemption BS, and now we are likely to lose the seat - to Stephen Colbert's sister of all people.

Don’t fall for that. Republicans nominated him fair and square. I know many folks who are strong bible-believers, greatest generation folks, pro-military, pro-life and rinos who willing voted for him twice during the primaries. We’re getting exactly what we deserved.

You are dead right! It wasn’t the establishment or liberals crossing over who doomed this district. It was the “values voters” who voted for him twice already and put him in this position.

Sanford will pull a Charlie Crist or maybe an Arlen Specter. Stay tuned and get the pop corn.

It’s the first district in South Carolina. It’s a republican district. But when a loser chooses to be selfish and not remain in private life, and when the republican electorate vote for him because the establishment shores up his support, the democrat’s going to win. Then we throw that democrat out next November.

What IF he withdrew from the race and endorsed a write in candidate? I know he won’t do that because he is a selfish a**hole, but if he did, could the GOP keep the seat?

Now that Republicans have decided that the South is evil, why should people there keep voting for them?

What are you talking about? When did the Republicans decided the "South is evil"?

This can not be blamed on the "establishment". It is not the fault of the national Republican party that the voters in this district, supposedly Southern values voters by the way, decided they wanted to give Mark "appalachian trail" Sanford another chance. For whatever reason, Republican/conservative primary voters are often just truly awful at picking strong candidates. You rarely see Democrats throw away seats like this, but Republicans of all ideological stripes seem to do it regularly.

“You do realize that he won the GOP primary? What does that say about South Carolina Republicans?”

The same result would happen in virtually every other Congressional District in the country. The candidate with the greatest “name ID” wins.

She should have ran last time. Maybe she'll run next time.

The NRCC’s move comes hours after Tuesday night’s report by the Associated Press that Sanford’s ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, filed a court complaint accusing him of trespassing at her home in early February – which would be a violation of the terms of their divorce agreement.

Hmmmmmm....there's some weirdness going on here.
