As he continues guiding the Senate toward eventual consideration of proposals to curb gun violence, Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) invoked his fathers suicide Tuesday as he once again pleaded with Republicans not to block legislation under consideration.
During his morning remarks on the Senate floor, Reid recalled receiving a 12-gauge shotgun ordered from a Sears catalog for his 12th birthday and made reference to incidents of gun violence in his home state of Nevada, including the 2010 shooting at a Las Vegas federal building.
He also noted that as a young state legislator, he sponsored a bill requiring a three-day waiting period before residents could purchase a handgun. The measure passed.
That alone has saved the lives of many people, Reid said. Sometimes people in a fit of passion will purchase the handgun to do bad things with it
even as my dad did, kill themselves. Waiting a few days helps.

What a Maroon!!!
No shame, eh. His family should shun him for that tactic, unless they are just as cold-hearted as he.
ban suicide!
Or, what if he’d decided to take his family with him ~ would WE feel better?
Shut up Harry.
Blah blah blah.
“Shall Not Be Infringed.” what part of that is so difficult to understand. Congress has been delegated no authority whatsoever to infringe upon any individual’s right to keep and bear arms. “Shall Not” does not mean except when they think they need to.
What a vacuous clown.
In the end, it’s all about him.
So law-abiding, innocent gun-owners have to suffer because Harry’s dad couldn’t take being Harry’s dad for another day and decided to use a gun for his exit.
How would these stupid background checks stop that?
Did he just decide to go out and buy a gun one day just to kill himself?
Not likely. It’s probably a gun he had for a long while and had bought when he hadn’t yet become fatally disappointed over his son Harry.
So having less than 10 rounds in the magazine would have prevented his father’s suicide?
Dang, talk about a bad shot...
This is an intensely personal family matter. For him to trot it out for political gain shows how low liberals will sink to get their way. Pathetic jerk!
If I had a son like Harry, I’d shoot myself too.
every leftists/socialist/communist is looking for a coffin to stand upon.
Even a Pathetic jerk wouldn't sink that low.
Will the NRA give Reid another “A” rating and endorse him for re-election again if he coughs up another taxpayer-funded gun range?
Let’s face it. The NRA has kept this clymer in office by refusing to support conservative Republican candidates instead. We’re paying the price for the NRA’s duplicity/stupidity.
We'll see if his strategy works.
I had an Uncle who killed himself with a shotgun in the bathtub. My own mother killed herself by taking an OD of sleeping pills and running her car in the garage with the door shut. I can’t count the number of people I know who have checked out early — I could NOT call for all shotguns to be banned -any more than I could support the current Administrations actions to destroy”marriage” to prevent anybody else’s Uncle for doing what my Uncle chose do. No more than I could call for sleeping pills to be pulled from the shelves—nor automobiles or garages to be banned to prevent anybody from knowing their mom decided it was time to check out.Should we require the police NOT respond when confronted by someone clearly intent upon suicide by cop? I don’t think so. Suicide is painless it brings on many changes —and you can take or leave it if you will.
Makes sense to me.
Should it be alarming to take on a philosophy attributed to Archie Bunker?
Did little Harry drive his dad to suicide?
I would not hold it against Reid, if he were to follow his fathers footsteps.
