Former 'Superintendent Of The Year' Could Go To Prison For 45 Years

Dr. Beverly Hall arrives for her last school board meeting in 2011.

Thirty-five Atlanta educators were indicted last week for allegedly participating in a cheating conspiracy involving one of America's most storied school superintendents.

Retired Atlanta schools chief Beverly Hall was named "National Superintendent of the Year" in 2009 and had previously headed troubled school districts in New York and Newark.

She was credited with rescuing the struggling Atlanta school system and helping it meet testing standards set by the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law.

By 2011, she had become the "pariah of a major city," The New York Times has reported, referring to Atlanta.

The alleged standardized test cheating scandal — which appears to be the largest in the nation's history — may date back as far as 2001, when test scores began to turn around in Atlanta public schools, according to CNN.

The state finally launched an investigation in 2010 of potential cheating in Atlanta. As part of that probe, the state enlisted at least one third-grade teacher to wear a wire to record her fellow teachers, according to The New York Times.

That investigation found Hall ignored serious allegations of cheating beginning in 2005, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

There are also allegations that Hall "ruled by fear" and created a culture so demanding that she would alienate subordinates who didn't deliver the results she wanted, The New York Times has reported.

The Culture of Corruption is going to protect its own. They’ll drop the charges and the money will just be dismissed as The Man’s money.

Randi Weingarten, Teachers Union Head, Sounds Off On Atlanta Cheating Scandal

"As the first of the indicted educators surrendered Tuesday, critics of standardized-testing policies are describing the alleged misdeeds in Atlanta as a natural reaction to this pressure.

It's a normal and expected reaction to the pressure.
The pressure is racist too.

Of course enabled by Bush’s “No Child Left Behind”, another example of Republican naivete.

Oh, I think she’ll do at LEAST 5 years.

State testing leaves a pretty solid paper trail, and even if she never emailed or wrote anyone directly to do this, the chain of command is pretty obvious.

State testing is done in the classroom with a teacher and a proctor (usually a volunteer) and then the tests are locked in the school vault for a day - the state then picks them up. 5-10 principals don’t simply spontaneously conspire to cheat on them - especially when the ones that DON’T get fired every three years.

The prosecution has a pretty easy case if no one snitches on her because of her principal appointments. Someone WILL snitch on her though.

I've read comments on the CNN article directly blaming Bush for all of this, and basically saying that the Atlanta teachers couldn't help doing what they did due to the NCLB law.

“The state finally launched an investigation in 2010 of potential cheating in Atlanta.”

I wonder what convinced them to start an investigation? Perhaps the fact that the children graduating from the schools could neither read nor write at anything approaching grade level and that the “graduates” needed heavy remediation if they were to be able to go to community college or even be gainfully employed in fields that didn’t use bar code scanners or pictures of items for sale on the point of sale devices?

That’s bull. When I worked in Jackson, Mississippi’s WORST schools they still followed the test legally even though 1/2 the 10th graders failed the Mississippi English exam.

This scandal brought me to the realization that we can not win elections when inner cities are involved. These jokers had cheating parties to change test grades! Their ends justify wherever means they use.

how do we change this? How do we stop the slide into chaotic third world hell?

I like that they used RICO like this. I hope I see the day where corrupt politicians and the DNC is brought up on Rico charges. Unfortunately, holder and corrupt gang will more likely use it with phoney attacks against conservatives. It is a potentially dangerous law.

Yes we CAN!

We can offer parents a check that they can take to a PRIVATE SCHOOL!

Start the voucher plan small. Perhaps with private donations. And when Dewayne's mom hears that Shadiqua's kid is going to a private school, she'll want a voucher too.

Vouchers get the kids out of the government school hell holes, and a chance to live a prosperous life, off the dole.

This is THE civil rights issue of our era, and we're not pursuing it. This should be a TOP priority.

And yes, I'm familiar with regulatory concerns. Well, let the bureaucrats try to suffocate Shadiqua's school with red tape. Shadiqua will be in their face. And she will learn something about the government she worships, too.
