Roger Miller had learned the basics from Sheb Wooley, who taught him guitar and bought him a fiddle. Desperate for a guitar of his own, he stole one from a store, for which he was given the choice of the Army or jail. He went into the Army and fought in Korea, a graduate of the Clash of 52" as he was fond of saying. After Korea, he was hired by Minnie Pearl to play fiddle in her band and rubbed shoulders with George Jones, who got him his first recording session. He was a successful Country songwriter in the Fifties,
Miller went to Hollywood to be an actor in 1964 and signed up with the Smash label, recording Dang Me and Chug-a-lug, which became huge hits for him. This song gave him immortality and came in at #7 on March 9, 1965.
