NM: City's gun buy-back program nets hundreds of weapons

The city is paying $100 for long guns (rifles, shotguns and the like), $150 for handguns, and $200 for any armament considered an assault weapon. On Jan. 12, the program netted 194 guns. On Saturday, it had garnered about 115 hand guns and at least 95 long guns by 2 p.m., with still an hour to go before closing.

-------------------------------cut-----------------------

Outside the police station, a group of four or five men gathered to offer cash to people who were bringing guns in. One man in the group said they did not wish to be identified, but said that they were “just trying to protect our rights” by offering more money to gun owners than the city program. He acknowledged that the few items they had purchased were “mostly junk — old .22s and hunting rifles.” Another man in that group said that a lot of people told him they’d rather see their guns destroyed and thus preferred giving them to the police.

Schaerfl said those men had a right to negotiate a deal on city property but they had to make the actual transaction elsewhere.

The city is planning a third round in the gun buy-back program on Saturday, March 9.

Rather high prices for a turn in event. They consider SKS rifles to be "assault weapons".

I do not see how the Deputy Chief Schaerfl can believe that people can negotiate a deal on city property, but not exchange the cash and guns there. There is very strong preemption language in the New Mexico Constitution.

I’m really surprised as hell that anyone in Santa Fe has any guns to sell.

Let me see How stupid am I? Buy a rifle for $1500 sell for $200. Are they nuts? Maybe sell a old rusted rifle that is beyond repair for $200.00. If it is antique though it could be worth $500 to Several thousand dollars depending on how rare!!!

I don’t live in New Mexico so I suppose it is none of my business, but if my county started buying back guns I would be deeply offended that they were pissing away my tax money on junk weapons.

I don’t pay taxes so some whack-off can us it to buy junk.

If they want to let people walk into the Sherrifs office and turn in a gun that’s fine, but buying guns with my tax money so they can destroy them is just plain crazy. If they can buy guns I have an old car I would be glad to sell them so they can junk it.

round 2 p.m., when things had gotten quiet, an elderly man came in with a knapsack holding three handguns, including a well-maintained .38 that was, in Schaerfl’s view, somewhere between 60 and 80 years old. The man said he inherited the three guns from his brother-in-law, who passed away a few years ago. “I was actually going to take them up to the city dump, but when I heard I could get $150 each for them, I brought them here,” the man said with a smile.

What a doofus!

When I was in New Mexico I never made it north of Albuquerque. Now I remember why.

The program also netted two SKS-type assault guns Saturday, he said.

Apparently that was the sum total of "assault weapons" sold to the city of Fanta Se for $200 each. Someone got ripped off big time. The cheapest SKS on Gunbroker.com recently was about $450. Particular models such as good condition original Russian SKSs are going for as much as $1,500.

...and many people told him they were giving up their arms because, “I haven’t fired this thing in 20 years.”

Clearly these were the gang bangers and bank robbers of the area. The streets of Fanta Se are so much safer now! /s LOL

if people were dropping old washing machines on others, these places would be doing washer buybacks instead of charging us to get rid of them in city garbage/recycling centers.

$100 for long guns . . . $200 for any armament considered an assault weapon

They need a gunsmith there to thread barrels and mount cheap plastic pistol grips on the way in. Raise the value of any non-functional rifle by $100 in a few minutes!

Yet another phoney gun buy back story.
Gubmint sets up a buy back plan.
Gubmint parks van loaded with previously conviscated weapons.
Gubmint stooges bring guns to “buy Back” location. Gubmint claims to have bought 200 gun (the ones they already had in their gun vault).
Gubmint notifies media of their great success.

The original story has too many holes in it.
