I suspect that Jim Nabors never wanted to be known as that gay actor and singer. That’s why old Southern queens kept it hushed. They preferred “eccentric”.
Actually, the quaint southern euphimism was “confirmed batchelor” - but then again, that was decades before “gay marriage”....
