The Dale County Sheriff's Department has established a command post location at the intersection of 231 North and Private Road 1539 in Dale County, Alabama following a shooting Multiple agencies are present assisting with the incident where multiple reports are indicating that a bus driver was shot and a student on-board the bus was taken hostage. The incident started around 3:40pm Tuesday near Destiny Church The Sheriff's Department is confirming that one adult male was shot, though they could not say how serious the person's injuries were. There are no suspects in custody and officials would not confirm a child hostage situation Though there's no confirmed evidence of explosive devices, a bomb squad is on scene. Everyone living in the immediate area around the scene is being evacuated. Both north and southbound traffic on U.S. Hwy. 231 near the church have been rerouted to keep commuters away from the area. Alabama State Troopers are on scene and say their assisting with perimeter security. The Sheriff's Department is the lead investigative agency. Authorities with the Dale County School System and the Ozark City School System have cancelled classes for Wednesday, January 30. A man who spoke with several children who were on-board the school bus says the students told him they witnessed a man step on- board where he shot the driver and took a young boy hostage.

My recollection of recent child-abduction statistics is that it’s a 94% chance that the man knows the child; it’s in the 70-ish range that it’s a custody matter.

UPDATE;

Michael Senn, a local minister, says his church owns the building occupied by Destiny Church, though it’s currently being rented by another congregation. He said while he was not on the scene when the incident happened, he spoke with several of the children a short time later.

Senn said one girl told him that the man who got on-board told most of the students to get off the bus. He then grabbed a young boy and shot the bus driver four times.

Senn said the children who got off the bus ran toward Destiny Church where they hid. “All the kids are at a safe place,” he said, though he added all of them appeared to be in shock.

Senn said he’s spoken to police, whom he says told him the child is still with the unidentified man, and they are in some sort of bunker or storm shelter. He said SWAT members are communicating with the suspect via a PVC pipe.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has been notified of the situation and his office says he is closely monitoring the situation. U.S. Representative Marth Roby (R-Dist.2) tweeted to her followers urging patience “as law enforcement officers do their best to get to the bottom of this...” and asked her followers to “be prayerful, lifting up those affected in prayers for comfort and healing.”

Keep checking back for additional details.

The suspect is a 65 year old male, so it’d have to be a grandpa custody issue. :)
I just checked the scanner, and the hostage situation is still ongoing. My gosh, that poor little 6 year old. My prayers for him and his family.

Indeed. I’ve been rummaging around to make see if my numbers are in the ballpark (they are), and I happened to see that grandparents account for 14% of the custody-related kidnappings.

I don’t know why anybody in the story is “unidentified”; the kids off the bus know who the victim is.

It sounds like a crazy guy. The neighbors said he’d be digging in his yard at 2:30am. And he was supposed to be in court tomorrow morning, for a menacing charge. Weird.

.
.

Out free to walk around -

- after a “menacing charge”?

What nutty liberal Judge would let him walk out after a serious charge against him?

“menancing” with what?

“menacing” who?

- not his index finger -

Is this possibly an “AA” situation?

Any previous incidents by this nut?

After killing the bus driver why would he simply give up and release a kid he is holding as a hostage?

If it is a grandkid - an emotionally crazed person may feel the child is better off dead.......

After that even an irrational fruitcake pretty well knows what is going to follow

Obama will have to make a statement on TV tomorrow morning at 11:45am - or when his hangover clears - whatever comes first

morning news said something about the driver not letting the kid get off the bus when this started, so that may be a factor? (if true)

I heard a report that the guy got on the bus saying he needed 2 children between the ages of 6 and 8.
Does not sound like he knew this child.

The police say they are in contact with him and that he’s saying that he won’t hurt the child.
I guess it depends on what his definition of hurt is.

I haven’t heard anything about the parents of the boy.

Time for the Ministry of Truth to expose the right-wing extremist culture that caused this otherwise peaceful man to commit this despicable act.

Yes, probably because driver figured something was wrong. And thus got shot.

To sum this up, crazy guy, mentally unstable, boards a school bus in his neighborhood and demands 2 kids ages 6-8, bus driver says no so crazy guy shoots him and takes a 6 year old hostage in his homemade bunker. Not much else out except boy still held hostage. I can’t find any details about boy or his parents.
