Unlike most issues these days that divide along party lines, the immediate fate of President Obama's new gun proposals will depend not as much on Republicans as his fellow Democrats in the Senate.
Senate Democratic leadership sources tell CNN that passing any new legislation will be extremely difficult because more than a dozen vulnerable Democrats from conservative states will probably resist much of what the president is pushing.
These Democratic sources say the most likely legislation to pass will be strengthening background checks, since it is the least overt form of gun control and it also appeals to gun rights advocates' emphasis on keeping guns away from people with mental health and criminal problems.
Although Senate Democrats like Dianne Feinstein will still make a high-profile push to renew the assault weapons ban and limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, senior Democratic sources say it is hard to see those measures getting enough support to pass the Democratic-led Senate.
The focus is on the Senate because Senate Democratic leaders know that House Republicans will not act on anything until the Senate does.
Democratic leadership sources say they intend to spend next week -- the first week the Senate is in session -- canvassing red-state Democrats to see what, if anything, is doable. Democratic senators who advocate various gun control measures will be lobbying their colleagues as well.
At a certain point, Democratic leaders will decide the best course of action, if any...

I agree, but don't be lulled into thinking all is safe. I'm sure his advisors told him that sweeping 'reforms" was a losing deal that would only steel the People against him, they also told him that the pared down pap he presented could be used to "demonstrate" that he has no intention to step on the 2nd Amendment. Breat a sigh of relief at your own peril - he and his minions are more resolved than ever to disarm us.
Good advice, he will operate behind the seams and in the obscure nasty little folds of bureaucratic arcana to achieve his aims. Lisa Jackson over at EPA showed them the way and you can bet that the FBI, BATF, DOJ and others will use the same tactics.
Exactly! If you don’t love communism then you must be crazy.
In the end, this will all be used to bludgeon Republicans in the mid-term elections. It will give the dems the House and Senate. That is the real goal...not letting the crisis go to waste and all. Oba’s own words regarding Sandy Hook.
“Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace.” - James Madison.
Thus far they have the first two, and are working on the third.
Obama is simply using the crisis to further the division in the repub party. He’s pandering to his base and will demonize the republicans going into the midterms. He really cant lose..
All of them need to be fired.
Only measures for raising revenue must start the House. The "fiscal cliff bill" was a Senate Amendment to the bill the House had passed in August, so even though it raised revenue, it was really originated in the Senate, but it technically was a House bill.
Article I, Section. 7. Constitution for the United States
All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.
So yes they can introduce any gun legislation they wish, and Senator FineSwine (Fienstien) will do that on the 22nd, the first day bills can be filed in the Senate. I'd have thought the text would have leaked by now, but I can't find it if it did.

If you have a strong stomach, here's what she has said on the subject:
Above summary and links to other statements she's made on the subject
What she doesn't say above is that by defining "pistol grip" as any feature that serves as grip, the law would ban all semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines, even those with fixed magazines if they hold more than 10 rounds. Tubular .22 magazines excepted.
This is horse-shit from CNN. The house isn’t passing anything. Baiting the house to pass it just to put the senate on notice is 100% horse-shit.
It is funny. The “key” to getting through Congress, is passing both the house and the senate. So, CNN sees the House passing something? No. Well, if the House isn’t going to pass it, how the hell can the senate be the key?
