A thought ~ a series of mini-strokes in the motor cortex, but not enough to do more than trip her up ~ then more mini-strokes and next thing you know there's enough damage to produce a blood cot ~ followed by .......................

A brain concussion is also possible. Clue ~ she's not taking her glucophage for her diabetes. That stuff patches up motor neurons and keeps you walking.
