White House Wavers on Hagel, Considers Others for Defense

White House Wavers on Hagel, Considers Others for Defense By Michael Hirsh | National Journal – 5 hrs ago

Besieged by criticism from right and left, and considerable skepticism from his former Senate colleagues, Chuck Hagel appears to be following the path of Susan Rice as a trial-balloon nominee who finds himself quickly losing altitude in Washington. And as happened with Rice, the White House is now signaling that it may soon puncture Hagel's hopes.

Just as occurred with Rice, the U.N. ambassador whose prospective nomination as secretary of State—leaked to the media—flamed out in the face of widespread criticism of her, President Obama appears to be rethinking his choice for Defense secretary.

A senior administration official told National Journal on Sunday that it was “fair” to say Obama is considering candidates other than Hagel for Defense secretary, in particular Michele Flournoy, who was under secretary of Defense for policy in Obama's first term, and Ashton Carter, the current deputy Defense secretary. Only a week ago, Bloomberg News reported that Hagel was Obama’s top choice.

The White House's revised characterization of Hagel’s standing came after what was, for the former Republican senator, a particularly discouraging series of comments on the Sunday-morning talk shows. Outgoing Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent, told CNN’s “State of the Union” that it would be “a very tough confirmation process,” while on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Hagel’s former fellow Republican in the Senate, Lindsey Graham, said Hagel’s would be “a challenging nomination.” Graham added: “I don’t think he’s going to get many Republican votes.”

No need to call the bus. It’s become a permanent fixture there. Windows are dirty, tires semi-flat, but lots of room left yet underneath.

Stinks a bit too, but that goes with the territory.

Nominate Weasley Clarke, he’d fit run in with the current regime.

Was thinking that “she who will not be named” and Kerry would make a good pair.

This is all a tempest in the proverbial teapot. Does it really matter who holds the office of Secretary of Defense or State? The left wing policies of the Obama clown parade will go forward regardless who holds those offices. Doubt even Obama would be influenced by a dolt like John Kerry or care what Hagel or anyone like him says at Cabinet meetings. The people who hold those offices are there as window dressing and sacrificial lambs to go under the bus if something “embarrassing” were to happen.

Pannetta is actually a somewhat practical and sane SECDEF. He knows how to get things done. The real story of the Bin Ladin raid was that Valerie Jarrett blocked it at every turn, so Pannetta went around her, enlisted the help of Biden and Hillary, and sprang it on Bath House Barry while he was playing in the golf course locker room with his boyfriend. Obama showed up at the White House Situation Room looking like the spectator that he is. Hagel is simply a prick. Even McCain thinks he is a prick, and that is saying something.

Panetta is not one of my favorite people, but I agree with you, based on Panetta's actions as the only decent member of Obama's cabinet and his performance under Bill Clinton.

Michele Flournoy
Rowan Scarborough writing in Human Events 'Soros Invades Pentagon' on April 21, 2009:
Democratic Party financier George Soros, who puts much of the blame for Islamic terrorists on America and former president George W. Bush, can celebrate his first foothold inside the Pentagon.

It is in the person of Rosa Brooks, far-left former Los Angeles Times columnist. She was once counsel to billionaire Soros' Open Societies Institute, whose funding arm bankrolls a number of hard-left pressure groups, such as MoveOn.org. MoveOn.org, of course, is the Washington outfit that smeared Gen. David Petraeus as a betrayer of his country, and depicted Bush in a Web ad as Adolph Hitler.

Brooks, who has also likened Bush to Hitler and claims the former president is "psychotic" and "fanatical," will not be a minor player. The Pentagon's No. 3 official and top policymaker, Undersecretary of Defense Michele Flournoy, has selected Brooks as a "principal adviser."

Congress should know exactly where its advice is coming from; while Flournoy moves her lips, George Soros does the talking.

Obama will choose another nominee who also hates Israel, but isn’t so obvious about the fact.

Then that’s who we’ll get. Soros is the Grifter running The Great Con. It’s hard to understand, but Obama and the Clintons are just Shills (assistants) to the Grifter. Soros is making big bucks off of setting the Middle East on fire. He’s using Obama and the Clintons for cover.

I agree with you. He is no Cheney or Rumsfeld. BUT, he comes across as a giant among men because the rest of the Obama crowd in power is so, so, so much worse.

Hagel is not anti gay. He just rolls with what is convenient at the moment.

He already tried to walk back that comment in typical Chuck Hagel fashion.

About 98% of the country comes across as giants among men when compared with the evil thugs in our White House. I'd rather have this guy as president than the evil communist we're stuck with for four more years:

At least this guy would be harmless instead of malicious.
