Vatican Responds to Wikileaks Disclosures

The Vatican is defending itself against a flurry of leaked diplomatic cables released by the controversial Wikileaks website in which it has been accused of refusing to cooperate in the Irish sex abuse scandal, trying to prevent Turkey from becoming a member of the European Union (EU), and attempting to get a reference to Europe’s Christian roots into the EU’s constitution.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the Vatican expressed skepticism at the reliability of the purported U.S. diplomatic cables that are in the process of being published by Wikileaks. They released a statement referring to “the extreme seriousness of publishing such a large amount of secret and confidential material, and its possible consequences.”

“Naturally these reports reflect the perceptions and opinions of the people who wrote them and cannot be considered as expressions of the Holy See itself, nor as exact quotations of the words of its officials,” the statement said. “Their reliability must, then, be evaluated carefully and with great prudence, bearing this circumstance in mind.”

One cable from the US embassy in Rome indicated that the Vatican was offended by requests from the Murphy Commission pertaining to the Irish sex abuse scandal because they were seen as an affront to Vatican sovereignty.

Dated February 26 of this year, the cable quoted Julieta Noyes, a US diplomat in Rome as saying, “While Vatican contacts immediately expressed deep sympathy for the victims and insisted that the first priority was preventing a recurrence, they also were angered by how the situation played out politically.”

ANI is reporting that other cables concerning the Vatican allege that in 2004, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger tried to have a reference to Europe’s Christian roots written into the EU Constitution and said allowing the predominantly Muslim country of Turkey into the EU “would further weaken his case for Europe’s Christian foundations.”

Leaked cables also showed concern in England that Pope Benedict XVI’s invitation to Anglicans to join the Church would spark anti-Catholic violence in that country.

Miquel Diaz, US ambassador to the Holy See, said in a separate statement, “We condemn in the strongest possible terms the disclosure of what is alleged to be classified State Department information. We will not comment on the content or the authenticity of that information.”

Diaz went on to praise the Obama administration’s “robust foreign policy that focuses on promoting America’s national interests and leading the world in solving the most complex challenges of our time.”

He added: “The Embassy of the United States to the Holy See has engaged in ongoing efforts with the Vatican to turn interfaith dialogue into actions in many of these areas, for the sake of the common good.”
