From staff reports
Larry Hagman, the North Texas native who played the conniving and mischievous J.R. Ewing on the TV show Dallas, died Friday at a Dallas hospital. He was 81.
Mr. Hagman died at 4:20 p.m. Friday at Medical City Dallas Hospital from complications of his recent battle with cancer, members of his family said.

I never watched Dallas because I always saw him as Maj. Nelson. Couldn’t take him seriously as a bad guy. RIP.
He had “silent Sundays” which apparently started as an effort to rest his voice.
He basically kept up the habit for the rest of his life. He wasn't an absolute fanatic about it - if someone asked him if he wanted a cup of coffee he would say "yes please" or "no thanks", he just consciously tried not to speak on Saturdays if possible. Kinda unusual, but not very bad.
And today we're finally there.
At the start of the last century to take away people's rights it took a Constitutional amendment. To undo Prohibition took another Constitutional amendment. Then came the ultimate Progressive, FDR, and today, in the 21st century, you can add or remove fundamental rights by passing a bill or, worse, Executive Order. Hagman's a typical liberal fool.
Never got into Dallas.
But many fond prepubescent memories of watching I Dream Of Jeannie.
RIP JR.
One less fatuous celebrity Marxist in the world. I hope the rest of Hollywood notices that life for the famous ends eventually.
I know the Capt. Nelson character was only the stuff of TV, but Hagman cut a very sharp image in uniform. He didn’t disgrace it like so many in the entertainment industry have.

He received his liver transplant at the Portland VA Medical Center. Still alot of employees around that remember him, especially the nurses. He was a very friendly and outgoing.
I agree with you...and that says a lot considering the era in which the show ran.
According to the obit, he did serve in the Air Force, in a USO capacity.
I remember him as Buck the translator in Fail Safe.
I met Larry at Rolling Thunder back in the 90’s.
He was one-of-us.
RIP, J.R.
All these posts and no one has brought up JR Ewing’s most famous quote:
“My daddy always told me that the opera ain’t over til the fat lady sings.”
She has sung.
Hagman was besties with Kieth Moon and drove him to rehab after Kieth overdosed on some Black Beauties.
I remember him for “I Dream of Jeannie”, “Dallas”, and being an anti-smoking zealot.
Cool!
Man, I wish you hadn’t mention obama, you woke me from the dream where he made NO appearance! LOL
Bob Dornan was in 24 episodes of the 1960’s “12 O’Clock High” TV series playing Gen Savage’s copilot. He is the nephew of Jack Haley, the “Tin Man” in “Wizard of Oz”. I have the entire “12 O’Clock High” TV series on DVD.
Yet his talent as a director is less recognised. His work in the 1972 classic film may never be equalled.
I don't see how it possibly could continue.
