More than 220 workers in Manchester and East Hartford face layoffs in the coming weeks, according to notices filed with the state.
TurboCare Inc., which makes parts for gas and steam turbines, plans to close its Manchester plant and lay off all 88 of its employees, a notice filed with the state Labor Department says.
The plant, at 80 Sheldon Road opposite the Manchester post office, will close on Dec. 31, according to the filing, known as a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice, or WARN notice. The work is being moved to a company plant in Massachusetts, the notice says.
TurboCare's Manchester plant has operated for close to 50 years under various names, including IMO Airfoil Delaval before its acquisition by TurboCare several years ago. The company is a subsidiary of the Siemens Group, based in Germany, and has two other Connecticut plants, at 182 Roberts St., East Hartford, and in Farmington.
A company official did not return requests for comment.
In the WARN notice filed Friday, TurboCare President Brian Glynn said the Manchester plant's operations will be consolidated into a company facility in Chicopee, Mass.
The move is intended to streamline the company's business and is the result of "months of effort to assess changing energy service market conditions and how the TurboCare assets are employed," Glynn said.
On its website, TurboCare describes itself as a global leader in steam and gas turbine blade production. The Manchester plant works in collaboration with Winston-Salem, N.C., the website says.
The TurboCare Group employs about 2,500 workers overall at 16 operations around the world serving industrial and power generation markets in more than 100 countries, the website adds.
Also filing a layoff notice was Oce North America, which said it is laying off 135 workers in the state, including a single employee at its East Hartford operations. Oce is a subsidiary of Japan's Canon Inc., which in 2010 acquired the company based in the Netherlands.
Oce is cutting 10 workers in Shelton and 124 in Trumbull, which is its North American headquarters. The job cuts at the digital printing equipment and services company are to take place over the course of a year, between Dec. 31 and the end of 2013.
Oce just a month ago ran an online help-wanted advertisement for a senior account manager at the East Hartford location.
But in the WARN notice, Randall J. Wagner, senior vice president of human resources at Oce's Chicago office, said the job cuts are the result of "careful consideration and an application of Oce's business judgment in connection with its integration with Canon. Oce has decided to consolidate certain operations with those of Canon," Wagner said.
Affected employees who can't find another position within the company will be offered an unspecified severance package, he said.
The company supplies digital printers, plotters, scanners, and related software, according to its website. The company was founded in 1877 and employs more than 20,000 people worldwide.
Did all these companies just wait until after the election to announce already planned layoffs or maybe the layoffs were decided when Obama won - or are these sort of “normal course of business” and we’re just paying more attention?

This is so weird that all of these layoffs are happening now. If the stupid American people wanted to keep their jobs - they should have voted for Mitt. I think many of the companies were waiting for the election, hoping that obamacare would be repealed. Nope, it isn’t going to happen - I hope the Santa Claus crowd is happy.
