German consumers will soon have to pay up to 20 percent more for milk at supermarkets, after one of the major retailers announced a significant price rise on Friday.
Discount supermarket retailer Aldi Süd said on Friday that it would increase its price for milk by about 9 cents per litre.
The other major German supermarket chains, including Edeka and Rewe, were expected to follow suit and to match the products in their lowest price categories to the Aldi prices. Lidl said it would stay in line with the market, and thus raise prices.
Prices for other dairy staples have also been rising recently. The price for butter went up twice over the past two months, making it almost 25 percent more expensive than earlier this year.
Industry experts said the price increases were caused by a higher demand for dairy products abroad, giving dairies more bargaining power in their negotiations with retailers.
Aldi Süd also decided on Friday to raise the prices on other as-yet unidentified unnamed dairy products, citing developments in the market and rising commodity prices.
Other staples are also becoming more expensive. Apple juice sold by Aldi Süd will now be 10 cents more expensive per litre. At 75 cents per litre, the price of normal apple juice is a long way from its temporary low of 49 cents per litre and has returned to the level it was around four years ago.
Producers say the rising prices are a step in the right direction and reflect increased production costs associated with energy and animal feed. Dairy farmers did not succeed, however, in their push to raise the price of a litre of milk by 15 cents.
Aldi Nord, the sister supermarket chain to Aldi Süd, did not issue a statement on prices on Friday. The companies traditionally are in step when it comes to prices. At one Aldi Nord branch in Münster on Friday, higher prices for milk and apple juice were reportedly already in effect.
Increased to $2.05/gal?
Cry me a freaking river.
With the EPA’s war on farmers, you can expect to see much higher prices an all farm products, especially milk, pork, eggs, chicken and more.
Somebody has to pay for all the money Germany has been giving Greece.
It looks like the German citizens are paying the price.
My understanding is that dairy products are heavily subsidized in Europe. That someone figured out importing subsidized European dairy products rather than producing their own is not surprising.
Currently the retail price is ≈$3.90/gal.
$2.05/gal? Color me unimpressed.
My daughter says milk in Seattle is about $2.50 per gallon.
When we lived in Germany, we purchased a LOT of our groceries at LIDL, ALDI, REAL, etc. Milk was about 55 Euro cents, so about 90 cents for a liter. Much fresher taste, and I loved the packaging. Small spout, lasted longer. Butter was always more expensive than the Commissary, but fresh veggies were BY FAR better tasting and better priced. Canned veggies were very cheap and a lot less preservatives. Many canned in jars, as well. Many of these had bakeries next door, or even on site inside the grocery, so you could purchase fresh from the oven breads! Yuummm! I still miss that! I’ve heard that prices have gone up, but so were prices in the Commissary, as well. Prices are going up everywhere.
Your daughter is blessed by not being in California.
