I think Obama made arrangements for Amb. Stevens to be kidnapped so he as The Master Negotiator could obtain his release just in time for the election.
It would also give him an excuse to release the blind sheik.

I read somewhere that Ambassador Stevens may have been overcome by the smoke from the fires that were set. If he died (or appeared to be dead when he was found), that would call for a "Plan B" if this was indeed a set up. That appears to have been to first blame it on the video and now to deny that they had any knowledge that the attack was taking place until it was too late to provide help.
