Oil and gas leases, acres, and permits all down under Obama
The Washington Examiner ^ | October 17, 2012 | Conn Carroll

During Tuesday night’s presidential debate, President Obama claimed, “Very little of what Governor Romney just said is true. We’ve opened up public lands. We’re actually drilling more on public lands than in the previous administration and the previous president was an oil man.”

But here are the facts, according to the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land management.

In 2008 under President Bush, there were a total of 55,085 oil and gas leases in effect on federal land.
In 2011 under Obama, there were just 49,174, a decrease of 11 percent.
In 2008 under Bush, there were 47.2 million acres of federal land under lease.
In 2011 under Obama, there were just 38.5 million, a decrease of 19 percent.
In 2008 under Bush, the federal government approved 6,617 oil and gas permits.
In 2011 under Obama, the federal government approved just 4,244 permits, a decrease of 36 percent.

The decrease in oil and gas leases, acres, and permits under Obama has led to a decrease in oil and gas production on federal land.

According to the Energy Information Administration

In 2010, 726 million barrels of oil were produced on federal land.
In 2011, just 626 billion barrels were produced, a decrease of 14 percent.
In 2010, 5,166 billion cubic feet of natural gas were produced on federal land.
In 2011, just 4,609 billion cubic feet were produced, a decrease of 11 percent.

[Obama debate quote] “Here’s what happened. You had a whole bunch of oil companies who had leases on public lands that they weren’t using. So what we said was you can’t just sit on this for 10, 20, 30 years, decide when you want to drill, when you want to produce, when it’s most profitable for you. These are public lands. So if you want to drill on public lands, you use it or you lose it. And so what we did was take away those leases. And we are now reletting them so that we can actually make a profit.”

Really? Did the government tear up leases that oil companies had paid billions of dollars for and throw the property back on the market?

The simple answer is no. I’m not sure what Obama was exactly referring to, but his administration has repeatedly accused oil companies of sitting on leases and failing to produce oil and gas from them. It’s a charge that drives the oil industry nuts, since it makes little economic sense to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions to purchase a lease and then sit on it for no reason. It takes years and a lot of expensive seismic work and exploratory drilling to determine whether an oil deposit has economic value, and the oil industry isn’t in the business of drilling dry holes for the fun of it. If there are delays, industry executives say, it’s because of governmental policy such as the offshore drilling ban Obama issued after the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

“It’s like you rent an apartment for $20 million and the landlord refuses to give you the keys to it,” said Erik Milito, director of exploration and production at the American Petroleum Institute. “Then he turns around and complains about it.”.....

The answer is simple.

The SOB lied, but the lie was put out there for his idiots and by the time it is disputed it is already in their little minds and working.Obama knows all about lying.

It’s my understanding that his oil and gas permits in federal waters were down by 66% too.

I don’t remember Obama touting that figure.

You know..., you can lie by telling the truth. Obama kept touting the amount of oil, but wouldn’t answer the question about reduced permits. He simply said that wasn’t true, and then touted the production numbers.

How he got away with his statements on coal, astound me.

He tried to act like he was the best friend of the coal industry. I’ll bet he gets perhaps half a vote out of the miners.

“but, but where was Candy on this?”

_____________________________________

“Early on last night, a voter asked about gas prices, leading to a rather heated exchange about a variety of energy-policy measures, including drilling leases. Eventually, moderator Candy Crowley tried to focus on a narrow point:

“Mr. President, could you address ... what the governor said, which is: If your energy policy was working, the price of gasoline would not be $4 a gallon here. Is that true?”

President Obama explained that “world demand’s gone up,” but I suspect some viewers were still confused about the overarching policy. ......”

The Clintons wrote the book on this. (lying with effect)

Look at her supposed falling on her sword.

“I am in charge of over 60 thousand State Department personnel, and as such their security needs rest with me. The State Department Security Service is tasked with reviewing and setting up the proper level of security. I’m going to review what went wrong here, and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

1. This the media describes as her taking the blame
2. No, she placed the blame on the State Department Security Service.

This gives the media the excuse to say she took the blame.
It also helps mitigate blame on Obama.
It also gives Lefties the excuse to forget Obama’s complicity, and respect Hillary.

Completely lost on all this, is that the SDSS gets the full blame.

Hillary doesn’t lose, because her supporters wouldn’t drop off if she gunned down Christ.

This is effective lying, and they’ve got it honed to a science.

The oil companies were leasing the land,
paying each year rent paid into the Treasury.

By terminating the leases, BHO reduced
cash payments to the Treasury.

By terminating the leases, he increased the deficit.

I thought Obama’s answer to why gasoline was less than $2 in 2009 while over $4 now was classic. His claim that a bad economy in 2009 depressed prices showed him to be clueless about basic economics. Romney had the perfect response ...if Obama had increased oil production and put more high mileage cars are on the road as he claimed shouldn’t gas prices be down?

Obama has yet to give a good reason for retracting leases and stopping the Canadian pipeline. We have pipelines all over the place is not an answer.

Obumbler actually said during the debate that coal production was up.

That same day of the debate, the Wall Street Journal had a story about railroads, specifically the ptoential earnings for CSX and Norfolk Southern, in which they stated that CSX will have lower earnings next quarter because coal shipments are down 12% at coal is a big item for them.

So another obumbler lie.

I am 84 years old and I have always been interested in politics and I have never seen anything like obumbler. It is a national disgrace that he made it to the Oval Office.

Demand may be up because of China.

But obumbler does not understand that demand is not the final word.

There is this thing called “supply and demand”.

If supply keeps up or gains on demand, the price remains either the same or is lower.

The law of supply and demand. As undefeatable as the law of gravity.

It sure is a national disgrace. The guy lied his ass off last night. Did the media hold his feet to the fire? No. Heck, even our own team doesn’t seem to catch all of it.

There are a number of disgraces associated with this guy aren’t there.

Thanks for hangin’ in there at 84, enough to help push good policy. I salute you.

A lot of that new production came from the Bakken/Three Forks formations (North Dakota and Montana).

Almost all on private land that the Feds couldn't do anything to stop.

They did try, though, from the attacks on fracking to even rounding up 28 bird carcases from over 6000 producing locations and trying to put people in jail over it (They wanted 15,000 dollars and six months in jail--per bird!)

When asked about windfarms and dead migratory birds, they ignored the question.

(Thankfully, a judge threw that out.)

Every time I hear that piker taking credit for that production, it just ticks me off. I didn't see his mangy arse out there. We built that, and he didn't have jack to do with it.

Smokin’ Joe, your take on this is probably exactly what mine would be. The EPA is so far out of control, it’s almost unimaginable.

Stossel made a presentation several days ago (possibly a repeat), and he revealed how the EPA funnels large sums of money to Leftist causes, some not even related to the environment.

Group X files suit against the EPA/or federal government concerning an environmental issue. The EPA steps in and settles for a large sum. From what Stossel was saying, in some instances there isn’t even a suit. The EPA merely responds to a document charging some sort of improper activity on the part of the EPA.

Our own money is being used to execute a war against us.
