Benghazigate: Obama Chose Not to Save Ambassador Stevens’ Life
Front Page Magazine ^ | 10/4/2012 | Daniel Greenfield

Posted on 10/04/2012 2:48:53 PM PDT by tobyhill

For weeks the Salafists had been carrying out attacks across Libya. The response of the Libyan Interior Minister had been that Libyan forces were not equipped to stop them. So when the US Consulate in Benghazi came under attack, Obama and Co. made the decision to reach out to a Libyan government which had already stated that it had no ability to intervene.

The hour is 5 p.m., Sept. 11, Washington time, and the scene is an Oval Office meeting among President Obama, the secretary of defense, the national security adviser and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi has been under assault for roughly 90 minutes. Some 30 U.S. citizens are at mortal risk. The whereabouts of Ambassador Stevens are unknown.

“There was no serious consideration at that hour of intervention with military force, officials said. Doing so without Libya’s permission could represent a violation of sovereignty and inflame the situation, they said. Instead, the State Department reached out to the Libyan government to get reinforcements to the scene.”

The attack on the Consulate was already a clear violation of US sovereignty and the entire invasion of Libya had been a violation of Libyan sovereignty. At this late date, after NATO had spent months bombing Libya, concern about the violation of its sovereignty was downright surreal.

Oh, good God, obama might as well have pulled the trigger himself.
I feel so badly for the Ambassador Steven’s family.

"the secretary of defense"

We need a clear-headed Secretary of WAR, loyal to United States.

"Doing so without Libya’s permission could represent a violation of sovereignty"

Correct me if I am wrong. But aren't embassies supposed to be sovereign property of the country occupying that ground?

There you go, Obama was sitting in the command chair. No gutsy call here. No carrier in the Med. No reaction force at the main embassy. No options. Not even Zell Miller spitballs.

He killed bin Laden and Stevens.

This morning, there was a news report that Obama wanted bin Laden alive so he could be tried in a federal court.

Story seems fishy.

Why not name those involved?

Sec. of Def. Panetta
NSA Tom Donilon
JCS Chairman Martin Dempsey

Panetta and Dempsey happened to be around the White Hut?

No Jarrett, no Axelrod, no DNI Clapper, no CIA Dir. Petraeus?

If such a meeting happened it’s doubtful that’s how it came down.

They are, indeed.

Technically, though, the insertion of military forces into another country without their permission would constitute a violation of sovereignty.

Which, in this particular case, amounts to nothing more than a lame excuse. The decision to "approach the Libyan authorities" is the functional equivalent of doing nothing.

Altogether, a horrid decision that no responsible American would have made...

The attack would last another 4 1/2 hours. A Marine contingent could've been flown in from Rota, Spain inside of three hours.

It might've been too late to save any lives...but the effort should've been made.

Post 54: Schedule for Clinton and Obama on 9-11-12:

“12:00 p.m. Secretary Clinton meets with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, at the White House.”

“Later in the afternoon, the President and the Vice President will meet with Secretary of Defense Panetta in the Oval Office.”

Obama and Panetta already had a meeting scheduled for “later in the afternoon.” Panetta, Donilon, and Dempsey are members of the National Security Council, along with Clinton, Geithner and Holder. Jarrett, Axelrod, Clapper, and Petraeus are not on the NSC.

So now the Vice-President is in on the meeting?

And I believe DNI Clapper is as much a member as JSC Chair Dempsey.

Daniel Greenfield, BTW, is relying on Bret Stephens of the WSJ as his source.
