On a recent evening, a hip-looking young woman was sorting through a stack of crates outside a fruit and vegetable store here in the working-class neighborhood of Vallecas as it shut down for the night.
At first glance, she looked as if she might be a store employee. But no. The young woman was looking through the days trash for her next meal. Already, she had found a dozen aging potatoes she deemed edible and loaded them onto a luggage cart parked nearby.
When you dont have enough money, she said, declining to give her name, this is what there is.
The woman, 33, said that she had once worked at the post office but that her unemployment benefits had run out and she was living now on 400 euros a month, about $520. She was squatting with some friends in a building that still had water and electricity, while collecting a little of everything from the garbage after stores closed and the streets were dark and quiet.
Such survival tactics are becoming increasingly commonplace here, with an unemployment rate over 50 percent among young people and more and more households having adults without jobs. So pervasive is the problem of scavenging that one Spanish city has resorted to installing locks on supermarket trash bins as a public health precaution.

Spain is a perfect audio-visual aid for the kind of socialist mediocrity Ubama and the rats want for America.
Are you practicing stupid?
Did i say no man?
The first refuge of the biggest fools on here are is to draw out their conservative card as though thats going to protect them from being fools.
So she finds a man how about the next and the next or is she the only woman scrounging in garbage for food in Spain?
Please.
If you want to pull out conservative credentials don’t do it in public and embarrass the rest of us.
4) Don't expect to be his only one. A man with resources has many options in difficult economic times.
Which I think is part of the reason Democrat politicians and their paid lackeys work so hard to create difficult economic times. :)
Please read on. He claims that position makes him a conservative.
He needs a mew dictionary.
I never said "prostitution". If her cooking and housekeeping skills are sufficient to keep her fed, then fine. See my #16 for a more generalized version.
In a societal breakdown on the level that Spain is seems to be heading toward, there will not be enough charity nor government welfare to deal with all the people who will ask for charity.
What is your alternative suggestion?
You have no suggestion.
You denigrate all the hard working women conservative women.
Your views on women are more in line with the middle east than the United States.
"The men have no jobs" is a general statement, implying that the set of men with jobs is effectively the null set. Twenty-five percent unemployment implies that seventy-five percent DO have jobs.
My statement was "Find a man who has a good job", meaning "Of the total set of men, select from the sub-set of men who happen to have an income that will support more than just himself".
>>Fortunately we still have enough suckers today. <<
Yeah, the Fed.
The woman in the article is in the situation she's in, precisely because she ISN'T working. She's unemployed.
Spain's welfare system has broken down. THERE IS NO MONEY to give her. So she has to scrounge.
Again, do you have an alternate solution, or are you just going to have a temper tantrum over somebody pointing out harsh realities?
You can dance around all you want but the fact is there is a quarter of the population jobless and of that a percentage with no income. Thats the fact. Its out there. It’s not debatable. There will always be more of that anonymous woman out there and eventually no husbands with jobs. You can pretend your suggestion was only about her while ignoring the tens of thousands of other women in the same boat across Spain but that will not change the fact that you consider women second class citizens.
-——one Spanish city has resorted to installing locks on supermarket trash bins as a public health precaution.-——
That act is the very definition of a looter in the manner of Anne Rand.
The people starving to death are prevented from gleaning food from trash bins as a public health measure.
I accept that. I submitted a solution that is likely to work for at least some of the women.
Here are the only choices:
(1) Get a job. If not an "official" job, then find somebody you can do something for in exchange for food and shelter.
(2) Depend on charity. Either family members willing to help out, private charity, or welfare. But the money appears to have run out for that.
(3) Die.
There is also (4): join a gang of looters and take what you can from those that have it. Trying that in my neighborhood will functionally be equivalent to (3). if not immediately, then eventually.
I love this. So by your statement The system is broke and she is scrounging because she’s broke but the system is not broke for men? You keep feigning ignorance over the fact that men are in the exact same situation as she is. You keep attempting to make yourself correct in your misogynist little world by pretending there’s some infinite number of working men to take care of all the unemployed women.
You’re wrong.
Your attitude of women as second class citizens is more inline with Afghanistan.
I won’t bother responding any longer so you can have the next ten or twenty responses. I won’t care. what you said was ignorant. I called you out on it. You can wriggle about all you want it won’t change facts.
And I said, “Prostitution by ANY OTHER NAME would still be immoral.” What about that did you not understand? What makes you think that a man (you, frinstance?) would “settle” for housekeeping skills if you knew a woman was dependent on you for her life?
You are no better than many of the overbearing, controlling, woman-hating men I’ve run across in my life, and your ideas are worse than cavemannish. At least cavemen recognized the real worth of women and respected them for their worth. You seem to look at women as chattel.
Not gonna happen, dude. You need a real life lesson on womanhood. With men like you, the human race would have ceased to exist a long time ago.
Abuse is abuse. You seem to think it’s OK. NOT!

And you know me so well that you also know what I have been through in my many years of life and living and trying to provide for my children as a single parent, and even as a single “displaced homemaker.”
Kudos to you for being so psychic.
Unless you have been where I have been, you need to sit down and shut up.
Thanks! (I think.)
you’re most welcome.
Never said that men weren't in a bad situation too. The article was about a particular woman, and I suggested a solution for that particular woman.
It's not necessarily a universally-applicable solution, but few things are.
In real life, you rarely have solutions, you have trade-offs. You list all your possible options, and you try to select the best (or least worst) of those options.
For unemployed people in Spain and Greece, the set of options are limited. For people in Somalia, they are even more limited. You pick from your available options. One of those options is always "give up and die".
I've had an old college buddy staying with me for a while. He had some health issues, was unable to keep a job, and it was either let him live with my family or see him on the streets. He's been living with us. He does the dishes and the laundry. He's now found some work, and hopefully will be moved out by the end of the year. But if he came in with the attitude of "give me food and shelter and don't expect me to do anything in return", I would have told him "There's the streets, have fun".
And about my being a male chauvinist pig, yep, that I am. My wife of thirty years tells me that at least once a week. But I've supported her and our kids for thirty years.
