I understand he was a lifelong Republican who called Obama a Marxist.

God bless his soul.

One of the enduring memories of my childhood was watching his show with my family every week. And Donny and Marie owe him big-time. Spider Sabich, not so much...

A good man whom God has spared from having to be here to see the Nation he loved humiliated and finally brought low...... Don’t pity him, pity the living.

I remember Dad playing his Christmas Carols on the old “hi-fi”, back in the 60s. Rip, Andy.

Sad, but at 84, not unexpected considering the bladder cancer. My Mom passed at the same age with bladder cancer, and I’ll tell you, she seemed almost relieved to not have to put up with the disease any more. That cancer is a real bummer.

Yes indeed, R.I.P. to a remarkably talented man.

There never will be singers like him again.

God bless his soul.

It is sad to lose these icons I grew up with... especially the conservative ones.

I especially loved Andy's Christmas specials in the early 70s. I'm sorry we never got a chance to see his Christmas spectacular in Branson... we had hoped to travel from Connecticut to Branson "someday".

Rest in peace, Andy...

No, Diamond6, I think you’re mistaken. Andy Williams was a life long DEMOCRAT, he actively supported Robert Kennedy for President in the late ‘60’s.. and sang “Ava Maria” at his funeral. While Mr. Williams may have changed his mind regarding Democrats since he has been living in Missouri these recent past years, I’ve not heard what he currently thought about Obama..although, I’ve heard that he DID support Obama in 2008...

I read a story from the AP today that said he was a life long Republican, he did support Robert Kennedy and sang Battle Hymn Republic at his funeral, and did call Obama a Marxist. Based upon that background I doubt seriously he supported Obama, but that’s what I know.

From Wikipedia:

Williams was close friends with Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, campaigning in 1968 for Kennedy's presidential campaign. Williams was among the celebrities who were present in Los Angeles at the Ambassador Hotel on the night Sirhan Sirhan shot and mortally wounded RFK in June 1968. Williams solemnly sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic" at RFK's funeral, by request of widow Ethel. By August 1969, over a year after Bobby Kennedy's death, Andy and Claudine named their newborn son 'Bobby' Williams. The Williams' friendship with Ethel Kennedy endured, with Williams even serving as escort to Ethel, during events in the 1970s. He also raised funds for George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign, performing at benefit concerts.[23]

While close friends with the Democratic Kennedys, Williams called himself a lifelong Republican.[24] On September 29, 2009, he was quoted by the Daily Telegraph as accusing President Barack Obama of "following Marxist theory" and "wanting the country to fail".[25][26] He gave Rush Limbaugh permission to use his recording of the song "Born Free" for the theme to the "Animal Rights Update" on his Limbaugh's radio show – in which a portion of the song is then followed by gunfire – saying "Hey, it's fine with me. I love what you're doing with it." The record company later blocked Limbaugh's use of the recording.[27]

So, it appears he's had a mixed political history. He himself called himself "a lifelong Republican". If he supported Obama in 2008, he turned on him fast.

Diamond6, you’re correct, I’ve come to believe that I was mistaken in this situation, especially after reading the wiki that you posted..and hearing Rush this morning, as he talk about Andy Williams. I’m glad that I was wrong..Mr. Williams was one of the best singers I’ve ever heard, and he will be missed.

I’m almost glad my father (Gunnery Sergeant, USMC 1943-65) didn’t see this.
