Romney mocked for comment about jet windows

During a Saturday fundraiser in Beverly Hills, Calif., which took in $6 million, Mitt Romney expressed his concerns over Ann Romney’s emergency landing on Friday. The candidate cast doubt on the mechanical design of airplane windows, in a general sense.

“When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous....” he said.

Look for Obama to order all US airlines to install windows that open on all their jet aircraft.

Every time Obama says something stupid or insane you can bet the press will ignore it and then act as if Romney did one and its a big deal.

deflect, distract and then demagogue

At least he didn’t say: “...as the plane is flying over 57 states.”

Sealed airline windows can really be a “bump in the road”

Well, if you roll down the windows at 20,000 feet, that’s certainly not going to let in fresh air and oxygen.

And it may mess up your hair.

True enough but...Romney doesn’t know why the windows on jet aircraft do not open? That’s just plain old stupidity. Obama and the media aside, that’s stupid.

Dear Mr. Wang,

Since you decided to slam Mitt Romney over jet airliner windows that won’t open, maybe you can explain to me why that’s the case.

My guess is this a$$#at is aware of the fact that you can’t open the windows in a jet airliner, and that’s about it.

I don’t think that for a layman, it’s unusual for them not to know why things like this don’t work, just that they don’t. He knows that if your car’s passenger compartment fills up with smoke, you open the windows. He might know that in a private plane flying at low altitudes, you might be able to do so too. He knows you can’t do that in a jet airliner, and that for some reason the designers wouldn’t allow you to open a window.

As usual, this is the press going after nothing, doing their best to embarrass their enemy as a dunderhead, like they did with Bush. They know he’s not, but they never allow truth to get in the way of their meme.

Mark

Almost as bad as saying the murder of a US Ambassador is just “a bump in the road”

Get in a plane filled with smoke and see how long it takes you to try to open a window with any method available.

He is fortunate he is not planning a funeral for his wife. This clip is more a relating of emotion than an educated engineer comment on a viable system. Although a method to introduce air safely into a cabin that is filled with a toxin could be a great invention...

Lower the plane to under 10,000 feet while you are still 20 minutes from an airport and you have a completely different set of results.

IIRC, the procedure in some airliners for a smoke filled cockpit is to get down to 10K feet and open the cockpit windows...

Passengers who survive the crash landing of airliners commonly succumb to asphyxiation from smoke and toxic fumes while on the ground, unable to escape the confines of a wrecked fuselage. Some kind of emergency access to outside air would have saved many lives through the years.
