Elizabeth Warren Admits She Is Not Licensed to Practice Law in Massachusetts
by Michael Patrick Leahy 24 Sep 2012, 7:43 AM PDT
Speaking to Boston's 96.9 FM radio program "Jim and Margery" on Monday, Democratic Senate challenger Elizabeth Warren admitted that she is not licensed to practice law in Massachusetts.
According to reports from listeners, she claimed that she does not maintain a law practice. She also "said that she gave up her New Jersey license because she could not keep up with the Continuing Education requirements," according to one listener who commented on Breitbart's Monday story, "Does Elizabeth Warren Have a Law License Problem?".
Ms. Warren's statement comes as a surprise to the many clients she's provided legal services to over the past decade.....

If she was paid money due to representing herself as a lawyer, isn't that illegal??? This headline should more correctly read Elizabeth Warren Guilty of Fraud.

Someone should dig deeper, because something’s not right here. The New Jersey CLE requirements are not that bad: they require only 24 hours of CLE every two years of which 4 have to be in Ethics (snicker). In the case of an attorney working and living out of state, these can be done through the Internet, see BCLE Reg. 201:8(b). This means that she would only have had to spend a few evenings a year watching CLE seminars over the Web. That can't be the reason she surrendered her license; there has to more to it.

You are probably correct. The supposition is that if she resigned then there is no easy way to determine when exactly she failed to meet the requirements to continue to practice law in NJ.

I'm sure they are.

Yep, and at least some of those CE courses are just a matter of showing up, no written exams, just tolerate the monotony for a couple of days, maybe just a matter of course registration whether you show up or not; and, I imagine lawyers make it pretty easy for themselves to get the credits.

I’ve been waiting for Netflix to make the F Troop series available for a while. Show still makes me crack up when I think about it. Cpl Randolph Agarn, from Passaic, NJ. O’Rourke Enterprises...The blind-as-a-bat look-out, Vanderbuilt, Dobbs, the bugler who can’t blow a lick, the old war-veteran, Duffy, who got his wound fighting alongside Davy Crockett at the Alamo. Classic stuff.

This is a pretty big deal. If she didn't maintain an active law license anywhere and she purported to act as counsel for anyone on anything, she is in serious trouble, as in the Massachusetts Bar will have to commence an investigation against her, and any client who had a less-than-perfect result in an action where she was associated could initiate complaints against her. If she had an active license in some state (but not NJ or MA) than it's much more fact-specific inquiry around what work she did and who supervised, and probably won't even get an investigation.
