And yet, they were greeted as liberators in the Ukraine!

Not that surprising, given the forced collectivization and attendant starvation imposed on the Ukrainians by Hitler's arch enemy, and rival for most evil man of the 20th century, Jospeph Stalin.

I’m teaching “Night” in my classroom currently. Couldn’t help but mention that there are some countries in the world (and you can guess who) that still want all Jews killed.

I had a relative in WWII, he was a gunner on a bomber. Their plane was shot down over Germany, everybody aboard died. The plane crashed on a German farm, and the farmer respectfully buried all the dead. Later, when the U.S. had invaded and was tying up loose ends, they were able to interview that farmer and disinter the dead and rebury them elsewhere. The point is that the German farmer had enough respect for the dead to give them a decent burial.

I understand why, Captain Obvious, do you understand why when the Red Army came, others in the same places (who?) greeted them as liberators?

Nothing was as simple and straight forward as we are being thought by the history manipulators.

I'm sorry. German troops were no angels any more than any other troops. But these conversations sound to me an awful lot like sidelined captives putting on their captors, not to mention the universal temptation of soldiers to exaggerate and exoticize their actions.

Thank you for your attention. You may now return to your previously scheduled German hatefest.

Does anyone doubt that some on the rabid left would not like to do the same to conservatives, Christians, etc...true hate is a powerful force (not the concocted ‘hate’ we hear from the gay lobby)

From the point of view of the residents of the East (Europe, D’UH!) for something like 1,000 years (can you count to 100? 1,000 is like counting to 100 ten times!) the invaders from the West brought civilization, while the invaders from the East brought nothing but savagery! That held true during the WWII. (The barbarisms of war are assumed.)

In The Last Flight of the Luftwaffe Adrian Weir documents cases in which American pilots who bailed out near German airbases were protected from hostile civilians and treated as fellow pilots by Luftwaffe members on the ground.

You know, I am German too, and I thank the good Lord everyday that He allowed for my ancestors to leave that Barbaric, humorless country everyday! Germans, like Mexicans, who wave their flags and see themselves as citizens of those respective countries first and foremost, rather than Americans, can freely leave, I am an American first and a German second, I am sick of hyphenated terms for Americans! The Germans were complacent in evil, no different than the Mooslims’ evil hatred of Jews!

Your post #13.

On atrocities committed in the last century.

No Germans were involved.

It is very human of people who are aghast at some terrible example of mass killing and genocide, to centre on one group. Throughout history there are examples of this very dark side of the human condition. I have too many contrary feelings to express my inner thoughts. I was treated so nicely on another thread on another subject.

I have a very distant descent from two young people who fled the horrible massacres in France in the 1600's. They married at St Dunstans, Stepney, London. Huguenots were the French protestants who were protected by the "Edict of Nantes." The French King lifted the edict. Murder, rape and occupation of their houses took place.

Now the best thing I can do to avoid the misunderstandings that might occur is to give some facts. This deals with ancestries.

Canadian Government statistics, carefully avoided by the Canadian press have been printed on the crime rates per capita by immigrants. Herewith the lowest crime rates which include Canadian born citizens.

(1) Austrians.
(2) Germans.
(3) Indians (from Asian India.
(3) Chinese

I will not give the highest rates of immigrant to Canada which commit crimes. A peaceful day here in Great Lakes country and the fall colours starting. I will end in quoting the immortal bard Robert Burns.

"Man's inhumanity to man, makes countless thousands mourn."

My first guess for the guy in the middle was Hungarian or perhaps one of the other German allies rather than Heer.

In any event, it appears they just grabbed random pictures to illustrate the story without bothering to see what they were getting.

In those POW camps those captured more often than not knew they were being audio monitored. What better way to p-off your captors and at the same time enhance your position within your group than with some “war stories” .POW camp audio tapes are proof of nothing. File photos are a different matter and probably exist on both sides.

hidden microphones on prisoners of war

That statement seemed a bit odd. What was state of the art in hidden microphones at that time? How did they record the microphones’ signals for later playback?

Not sure what they looked like, but I know that Allen Funt of ‘Candid Camera’ fame was a WWII expert with hidden microphones and wire recorders.
