We have all heard about "ligers", a cross between a lion and a tiger.

Most often infertile.

Not always!

One interesting thing is the difference between a “liger” (male lion and female tiger) and a “tigon” (male tiger and female lion).

I know of a “tigon” being successfully bred with a tiger - leading to a “ti-tigon” (75% tiger, 25% lion).

The reason why such cross species hybrids can have fertility problems is that when reproductive cells are produced the paternal chromosomes match up with the maternal chromosomes to ‘reshuffle’ the DNA - that can be hard when they chromosomes don't match up because the mother and father are different species.

ABC needs to do some fact checking
in 1943, a hybrid between a lion and a tiger was mated with a lion at the Munich Hellabrunn Zoo.

/remembered reading about this the first time i heard of a liger.
