Will 'the smirk' come to haunt Romney? [when the media need to bury you, their pit is bottomless]
Telegraph - UK ^ | September 13, 2012 | Damian Thompson

That's quite some smirk on Mitt Romney's face as he walks away from the podium in Jacksonville, Florida, having just woven in criticism of Barack Obama to his reaction to the murders in Benghazi. The photograph was taken by Charles Dharapak of the Associated Press, and I suspect it's going to be one of the most significant images of the campaign. Maybe Mr Romney was just unlucky, but on the other hand… are you surprised? Honestly?

The only smirk I see is on Damian Thompson. Little weasel.

I am sorry...but I don't get the point of this article. How is Romney's expression more newsworthy than the bare facts of what actually happened, why it happened and Romney's response to it?

I think the MSM scribblers and loudmouth idiots need to grow up and start seeing themselves and their ‘profession’ in a little more mature perspective.

This is what you get when numb skulls calling themselves ‘journalists’ and the dumbed-down Americans who comprise their audience have spent tooooo much time with the Liberal and childishly subjective approach to real life and real life issues.

It's time to return to facts.

Blame Watergate, when suddenly journalism became about "Changing the World."

Deflect the blame for what happened

Distract with another issue, real or imagined

Demagogue the opposition as if you know whats up and they are stupid, especially if its the opposite

The DUmmies were wetting their panties about this yesterday, screeching that it was so “inappropriate” for Romney to be smiling.

Wonder if they felt the same way about Clinton at Ron Brown’s funeral?

The point of the article is that the MSM is trying to paint Romney as an insincere, crass, political opportunist. The smirk is supposed to be a "tell" that proves that Romney is self satisfied at what he just did.

Right, I’d certainly hope a Conservative would be satisfied with what comes out of his own mouth on significant issues. It’s to be expected that he’d speak his mind. That’s not something for a professional journalist to challenge.

I just don’t know why the MSM would waste its time and demean itself to make anything out of Romney’s attitude when the real issue is what he says

Smirking is a Democrat artform.

[Joe Klein on the "Bush Smirk:"] ..."It would be easy to mistake such elaborate body language for arrogance, as more than a few observers have, whereas the true meaning of the tic may be the exact opposite. It may just signify relief--that he has successfully managed to jump another public hurdle without embarrassing himself. Or it may mean nothing at all."....

He's right. Certainly about this "Romney smirk." To the extent that it's visible at all, I think it's just the neutral kind of expression one has after doing something difficult. One doesn't want to appear anguished and spent, especially if one's a politician and there are cameras around, so the face resolves itself into a mild, little half smile, with no "arrogance" or "self-satisfaction" -- not much of any emotion, save relief -- behind it.

With Bush, most of the pictures you find of him "smirking" really aren't that. A full smile, an agonized grimace, a neutral, blank expression, or even a frown of determination gets labelled a "smirk" by some people when it comes to G.W. Bush. I don't doubt that there are photos of him smirking, but so many of the "smirks" were in his critics' own heads.

Also perhaps in Bush's face itself. Some people's faces aren't symmetrical, so attempts at mild, benign smile come out crooked, and there's not much they can do about it. Some people purse their lips or grit their teeth when they try to concentrate, and that's also something enemies can read things into.

Anyway, it is silly to talk so much about this stuff, given what's going on overseas now. It's the sort of thing that's going to backfire on the liberals, though if Romney is elected, the "arrogant smirk" is the template his attackers will use, and it's being created now right before our eyes.

I think you answered your own question. The MSM knows what the real issue is, which is why they want to talk about anything but the real issue.

I’m a little tired of the MSM attack on Romney.

He said just what he should have said... he re iterated it for the idiots who wanted him to mealy mouth about it once they let him know THEY didn’t like it.

Tough!!

It’s called POLITICS. The guy is running for President, he was SUPPOSED to make a statement and if YOU didn’t like it, too bad!

I think Mitt could not have been more clear and correct!

AND every time he faces down the MSM idiots, I like him even MORE!

Romney always has this look on his face.

You're right. I noticed during the debates, one of the other candidates could be saying the most negative things about Romney, the camera would cut to Romney for reaction, and Romney be looking at them with that little smile, like the words weren't upsetting him at all. I think it's just his way, his normal expression.

And you have to also look at it from the other side. If Romney had not said anything, the MSM would have said he was AWOL and not appearing presidential in a time of crisis.

Romney knows it's a "heads I win, tails you lose" when dealing with the MSM, so he's just going to be himself and let them bray like the pack animals that they are.

Exactly. Anyone who is complaining about Romney speaking up, wasn’t going to vote for him anyway.

It’s a stretch alright. What’s the MSM going to come up with next week? Will they tell us they know what Romney’s thinking by the way one eyebrow is raised?

After watching the entire press conference it may have been a smirk. Not because of any disregard of world events, but because he had just been asked the same question 7 times in a row. He probably thought it was “Groundhog Day”

Harken back to GWB’s smirk. The Liberal Agenda Media tried for months to pin a “smirk” on GWB. They almost succeeded, but after 9-11 no more Media Smirk attempts.

This, with Obama’s face replacing Urkle’s, would properly sum up the situation.

A growing world crisis....and he’s off to Vega’s.
