Despite Threats, No Marines Guarded U.S. Consulate In Libya
Breitbart.com ^ | September 12, 2012 | John Nolte

On a target date like the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, it is quite the jaw-dropping revelation to learn that there were no Marines guarding the U. S. consulate where Chris Stevens, our ambassador to Libya, was brutally murdered yesterday:

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz said that Marines were not posted to the consulate, unlike the embassy in the capital, Tripoli.

A defense official told POLITICO on Wednesday that the Pentagon is sending an elite team of about 50 additional Marines, called a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, to reinforce the embassy.

A senior administration official Wednesday called the Benghazi consulate “an interim facility,” which the State Department began using “before the fall of Qadhafi.” It was staffed Tuesday by Libyan and State Department security officers. The consulate came under fire from heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. By the time the attack ended several hours later, four Americans were dead and three others had been injured.

The Benghazi consulate had “lock-and-key” security, not the same level of defenses as a formal embassy, an intelligence source told POLITICO. That means it had no bulletproof glass, reinforced doors or other features common to embassies. The intelligence source contrasted it with the American embassy in Cairo, Egypt – “a permanent facility, which is a lot easier to defend.” The Cairo embassy also was attacked Tuesday.

The media will never demand answers for this horrifying news, but hopefully a Congressional investigation will.

A former SEAL who was working for the CIA was one of the “staffers” who was killed. He went down shooting is what I have heard.

(Interesting factoid: in its entire history since 1962, no SEAL has ever been captured alive. Ponder on that.)

Y'know ... I can't understand why Chris didn't have or have access to, guns.

If I role play, and I'm sitting at my desk and it sure looks ugly out there, I'm going to entertain the thought I may never see my wife again in a matter of minutes or hours.

And if I DO have those thoughts, I want to be able to make my last stand, KNOWING these animals are going to do horrible things to my dead body and flash the pictures all ove the world.

Yessir .. I want at least a 1911 at the ready with a shitload of ammo

Yeah, they wouldn’t have been allowed to return fire without permission, and permission would have taken 48 hours...

This whole situation has me so incensed...I have no words. It was totally avoidable.

I hope Romney’s handlers use this gift that has fallen into their laps effectively.

Indeed.

I searched yesterday for anything concerning this issue but turned up nothing. "WHERE WERE THE MARINES?" was the obvious question that should have been asked by the Pravda Press. It wasn't asked and it won't be.

no Marines guarding the U. S. consulate

This had to be a decision by someone, somewhere, that will never be held accountable. When I was stationed in Munich, 40 years ago, there were Marines stationed at the Consulate.

It’s no wonder that the enemy feels emboldened. They no longer feel threatened nor fear rapid reprisal. We need another 1LT Presley O’Bannon, the Hero of Derna, a man with steel in his spine at the helm of our ship of state.

For God’s sake, he was from SF and graduated from Berkeley! What are the odds that he had ever held a firearm in his hands?

You’re thinking like some guy from flyover country clinging to God and guns.

We are different, I don’t have to see something ugly outside to have a Glock mod 30 on my person, it’s an accessory, like my wedding ring, I wear it everywhere.

This should be the biggest story of all. The Consulate had no bulletproof glass or even windows coated with mylar. They had what amounted to a simple lock and key operation that one would find in an office or home. It was unsecured.

"Benghazi residents said the consulate never had a major security presence, and lawmakers in Washington described it as a “temporary” facility that did not meet the latest State Department security requirements and was scheduled to be replaced. U.S. military officials said it was not guarded by U.S. Marines, as are most embassies and many consulates."

"There had been signs of a threat earlier. On June 5, a bomb exploded outside the gates of the consulate in the first attack on an American facility since the fall of Gaddafi. No one was injured."

"A jihadist group calling itself “Brigades of Imprisoned Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman” claimed responsibility, according to the Site monitoring service. The group posted a message on jihadist forums saying the attack was a response to the drone strike that killed Libi in Pakistan on June 4. The group is named after the blind Egyptian sheik who is serving a life sentence for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing."

"On June 10, two British bodyguards were injured in an attack in Benghazi on a convoy carrying the British ambassador. The assailants used rocket-propelled grenades to attack the convoy as it was pulling out of the British Consulate.

"Militants also have been blamed for attacks on the Tunisian Consulate in Benghazi and on the International Committee of the Red Cross in Libya."

If we had a real MSM in this country, the question would be, "Why did we put Americans at risk in such an unprotected facility given the conditions in Libya and previous recent attacks in Benghazi against the consulate and British interests. This needs to be investigated immediately.

Unacceptable. I want heads. I want responsibility for this failure laid on doorsteps.

Rest the souls who endured this atrocity.

Excellent sequence Grandpa Dave. Thank you. It gives me some solace that there are people out there who see what is really going on. Thank you.

Hussein can’t be concerned about embassy workers killed. Just concerned for contraceptives for college students.

That Romney is to blame. ///sarc

If this doesn’t disqualify him for a second term, nothing will.

No Marines in Libya, in Egypt, no ammo. What the hell were these folks supposed to do? Use harsh language?

God, what have we got, President Gorman?
