Polls show Romney soars with independent voters

Recent polls show President Obama enjoying a bounce in the polls following last week's Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., but buried in those data is good news for Mitt Romney about voter enthusiasm and the preferences of independents, who could decide the election.

The CNN/ORC International poll of registered and likely voters released Tuesday shows likely voters favoring Obama by 52 percent to 46 percent over Romney -- evidence, pundits said, of a post-convention bump for the president.

But a figure buried in the report shows Romney leading Obama among likely independent voters, 54 percent to 40 percent.

Both Democrats and Republicans believe independents will be critical to deciding the outcome of the election, in part because they make up a growing part of the electorate and are considered up for grabs because they fluctuate in their political preferences from one election to the next.

"That's a significant lead," said pollster Ron Faucheux.

It was the independent vote that helped Obama win the 2008 election. He won 52 percent of independents, compared with 44 percent for McCain. Independents comprised about 33 percent of the overall vote in 2008.

"If Romney can beat Obama among independents this time, he can win the election."

There has to be a much bigger pool of Independants this ttime than in 2008...

The Democrats weho voted for Obama in 2008 but are now unhappy

and the Conservatives who wont vote for Willard...are probably tossed in as Independants because they now longer identify as Republicanms...

This is the first election where is stinks whoever wins. This election is the biggest waste. A pity that with such a weak President, we picked the bottom of the barrel. A nominee who will make it as bad as the President. I don’t think we have ever been in the position before. What a wasted opportunity that the Republicans put us in. No wonder people are going from Republican to Independent.

From your second sentence I take it you mean McCain over Romney, in which case I would agree. I would also add that McCain has been quietly but consistently prolife as far as I am aware.

You are probably right. I have seen so many people so disaffected on both sides at the same time. That is a good thing, IMO, as the real struggle is not left versus right as much as it is extractors and oppressors at the top versus producers at the bottom. The R and D franchise is at the top.

The thing I do like about McCain is that like you mentioned always pro-life and he is a great advocate for doing the right thing in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are going to leave a mess over there because both Obama and Romney want to leave in 2014....great another Egypt or worse. That is 100 percent why I am CONVINCED that Romney and Obama are basically twins when it comes to principles and values.

Many Romney voters are putting themselves in Undecided column due to the "racism" factor. Personally, I have no problem stating that I am voting against Obama but some guilt-ridden whites actually do because they are afraid it will be perceived by other as "racist." So they just keep their mouths shut or say they are undecided.

Personally I have no issue with a black president. I would vote for a Herman Cain or Allen West in a heartbeat over Mitt Romney. It's just a shame that our first black president had to be this one.

If Romney is up 54%-40% over Obama with independents, then the claim that Obama is up 6% overall is a bunch of crap. They must have over sampled dems by a huge margin to distract from these results. Too many polls are being taken to create public opinion instead of reflecting it.
