MONTICELLO - Two Monticello men were arrested on Sunday after police say they drove a car at people standing outside a Jewish bakery, yelled ethnic slurs at the Hasidic patrons and then punched one man.
Police say Esai Diaz, 21, and Brandon Morales, 20, were charged. At 9:35 p.m. police responded to Fialkoffs bungalow colony on Waverly Avenue.
Witnesses told police that Diaz, who was driving a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder, tried to hit people standing in the bakerys parking lot. Morales, seated in the front passengers seat, reportedly yelled, Go home, go back to your (expletive) Jews.
Nobody was hit, Lt. Mark Johnstone said. People did feel that Diaz deliberately drove at them.
After driving off, the car returned a few minutes later. Police say Morales got out of the car and punched a man in the arm. They then attempted to drive away but the car wouldnt start. So they fled on foot with some of the bakerys patrons chasing them. Officers arrested the pair a short time later.
Johnstone said police havent determined what, if anything, started this.
Diaz had eight active suspensions on his license, police say.
Diaz was charged with felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation; Morales was charged with felony aggravated harassment and a separate violation of harassment.
They were arraigned before Monticello Justice Josephine Finn and taken to the Sullivan County Jail on $2,500 bail.

“Go home, you Jews!”
“Go home, you wetbacks!”
Conservatives, surely, and in an SUV.
Typical Democrats...!
My first question was; Did anyone ever consider checking the immigration status of the perps?
I was in that community for a few days this time last year for setups between Watkins Glen and Montreal. What struck me was the size of the Hasidic community there and more-so, the shack type nature of the buildings in their fenced in areas. I would not even consider living through a winter season in them, even here in Florida.
Of course it’s not a hate crome - a hate crime, as everyone knows, can only be a crime against Blacks.
Those shack type places are called bungalows and the people don’t live there year-round. They are merely summer vacation spots in self-contained “colonies”. There are also dozens of Orthodox sleepover camps in the Monticello area, so you may have also been seeing bunks for campers. There are now permanent, year-round Orthodox communities up there, but they are more substantial regular residential structures.
Why bother? Under this regime, since they are under 30, and can self-claim residency and high school attendance, they are pretty much immune to deportation unless they commit a significant crime. Driving violations, or punching someone on the arm, probably don't count.
Thanks for the clarification. It was just a shock to see them.
