Brilliant in a bizarre kind of way.
What other way to describe the Gas for Guns trade scheduled for Sept. 15 at Bloomfield Full Gospel Baptist Church in South Memphis?
Modeled after similar programs in other cities with too much gun crime, Gas for Guns offers a $50 gas card and two tickets to a Memphis Grizzlies game to anyone willing to trade in an unwanted gun no questions asked.
Mayor A C Wharton, a number of Memphis-area radio stations, The Tri-State Defender newspaper and Bloomfield Baptist all have pitched in to make this event work and let's hope it's a smashing success.

These events are nothing but political theater designed to delegitimize armed citizens. They have three practical effects: They defaud ignorant poor people of valuable assets for a pittance; they increase the demand for new guns by reducing the existant supply; and they waste the police resources spent on this nonsense.
Though not as clear, they likely increase corruption by unmercifully tempting officers to take some of the best war trophies and hunting rifles and shotguns home rather than destroying items worth thousands of dollars.
Activists have used these events to good purpose:

Every gun, a Wanted gun.
For what it’s worth, the Tri-State Defender newspaper is a black oriented newspaper. So it would appear that the black community is being targeted for this gun buyback.

My M-16 was gas operated. I always wondered where to get gas for it.

Anyone venturing to that part of Memphis would be advised to keep one gun for the trip out
People who escaped from Memphis don't want to return there. Cops from elsewhere in TN don't want to patrol there.
It has a truly terrible crime reputation. If this gets low hanging fruit out of the hands of would-be criminals, it's a good thing.
You’re confused. They’re giving out free Co2 cartridges for pellet guns.
