R. Lee Ermey, the actor best known for his role as the drill sergeant in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket," claims he was fired by GEICO for bashing President Obama.
During an impromptu interview with TMZ, Ermey also said, "If youre a conservative in this town, you better watch out" (videos follow with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Webb wasn't really a D.I. - he was an actor.I'm well aware of that and as one who served in the Corps I also know that Webb, who was a fat body, was not the definitive DI.
But Webb, in my opinion, studying the type rather than drawing only on his personal experience, got closer to the archetypical D.I. than Ermey's more idiosyncratic performance.
What a load of nonsense. How much time have you spent around real DIs?

When I think of DI’s portrayed in movies, I think of Darren McGavin in the Made-For-TV movie “Tribes.”

No $hit Sir. And re giving blood, we were asked many questions, one of them being have you had strep throat in the last 6 months. Well, I had, so I spent the day cleaning the area. That was fun.

My understanding is that "former" is not used when referring to a Marine. As a former Marine I can tell you that you suffer from a misunderstanding.
I have heard of "dishonored" or "disgraced" being applied to a few - but not "former"
You've never heard of "ex"?

GEICO is probably the worst insurance company in the country. That company will do anything to avoid paying a legitimate claim.

I heard what I heard from a Marine; perhaps there is a difference of opinion, eh?
When you swear the oath, is there a time limitation on it?

I can sympathize with the guy, but anyone who makes openly political statements while employed in a high-profile position really runs a serious risk of alienating potential customers on either side of the aisle.
I'll use that moron who berated the girl at the Chick-Fil-A drive-up window in Arizona -- and then posted a video of the incident on YouTube -- as Exhibit A on this one. He was fired from his position as a CFO shortly after that.

“I'm former Marine who went through PI about the same time Ermey was there”.
Bless you for your service. I believe R. Lee was a DI in Hollywood, not PI. I went to basic in the early 80’s at Fort Leonard Wood. The Drills would absolutely chew your ass if you called them Sir. But, we absolutely had to refer to them as their correct rank. IE, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class etc... It was probably a picnic compared to PI, but I don't recall having a shoulder to cry on. I think I was in one of the last army basic training units that never wore sneakers. We even did PT tests in “Cruit” boots.
