Sarah Palin endorses third-party run if Akin won’t drop out
The Washington Examiner ^ | August 22, 2012 | Joel Gehrke

Posted on 08/22/2012 12:08:00 AM PDT by Publius804

Sarah Palin endorsed a third-party candidacy against Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., if he persists in his refusal to drop out of the general election campaign after making startling comments about rape and abortion.

“We’ve got to take back the Senate and Missouri is a must-win state,” Palin told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “The way we do that is to have someone like Sarah Steelman be able to run — even if it’s as a third-party candidate — to be able to run and help us take this back.” Palin endorsed Steelman in the primary, which was regarded as showdown for the privilege of challenging the deeply-unpopular Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.

The former Alaska governor reiterated her support for a third-party run when considering how conservatives should respond if Akin does not drop out before the state prints the ballots for the general election.

“Maybe it is a third-party run of Sarah Steelman — that I could get behind,” she said. “Granted, ‘the status quo has got to go’ [Steelman's campaign motto] would be an odd name for a third party, but we’ll coin it, we’ll adopt it, we’ll run with it if that’s what it takes in order to get a common sense, constitutional, happens-to-be-pro-life woman in Missouri to clean up this mess that has been created and at the same time take back the Senate.”

Can someone throw in as a third party candidate this late in the game and still be on the ballot?

I'm learning about Aiken through you.

To be fair to Akin (who I believe is probably a good man with good intentions) I only know him since this fiasco of his. I'm sure there are others in his state that know him much more. It's just that I prefer that we not depend on the likes of a Joe Biden to give us a victory in November.

The left will eat him up and use him as the representative of this entire movement of ours.

"legitimate rape" (meaning forceable) and "statutory rape"

Ok. Now I'm getting it - I was taking the words 'legitimate rape' as something that was legit to do - I never heard those words used together before. So thanks for shining some light on my 'duh' thinking!

Hear Hear!

But histrionics are the nature of political forums and we are no different

This one has been a real doozy here

You would think Akin said something nasty about Sarah Palin or declared he loved Mormonism

I agree, also, with that. How did it get so ‘nation’ known? Was it McCaskill’s doings? Or did he say it on national TV? I’m just stepping into this mess now.

As a social-conservative... I don't put a lot of stock on "politicians." And this one, seems to be an idiot who can not manage his mouth and on top of everything else, seems to be an ARROGANT and SELFISH... or should I say "Extra-Selfish," politician, and that is really bad.

I hope social-conservatives don't fall for this idiot....

"Akin is making life very difficult, he hurts the party and the pro-life cause."

Yep. My fear is that not only will he make a mockery of the pro-life cause, but also that if Akin continues on and loses (and potentially hurts candidates in other races), there will be a huge push by the GOP Establishment to select pro-choice, or at least watered-down pro-life candidates, in purple and blue state races going forward.

They already love their Big Tent pandering- this would be a major coup for them, and they would simply point out Akin's loss repeatedly as the reason why this needs to be done. And the thing is... it would be a lot harder to argue with them solely because of Akin's embarrassing comments and graceless, selfish behavior.

Any groups that continue to back him are playing with fire...

While I like Akin’s stance against the GOPe’s abortionists, I think Palin has a point. Still, a third party run against a prolife like Akin would split the vote, handing the abortionists clear victory.

Palin is simply wrong on her strategy.

A third Party run just divides the vote.

The equivalent would be to have Ron Paul run for President in a three way with Romney and Obama.

If we had a real RNC, they would have held behind the scenes discussions with Akin.

But no, the blithering idiots at the RNC, Rove, Palin etc., all just went in guns blazing. Now all of those shots at Akin will turn up on McCaskill’s TV ads.

Dumbasses, Morons, Idiots....as stupid as Akin’s comments were, the GOP E just lost the Senate.

“Sarah carries that ‘Mama Grizzly’ bit too far on some occasions...”

IMO, it was her way of applying pressure.

Her candidate, Steelman, can’t run.

“So, you are supporting a third party run . . .”

I didn’t say that. I was repeating what Sarah said.

As I said in my last post, I believe she was applying pressure to get him to drop out.

Thank you for misreading my reply.

This guy phrased his thoughts perhaps not as well as you would wish, but apparently enough voters got his message to vote for him in the Primary.

I doubt he would've won the Primary if he had said this before voting time.

Just saying.

The one thing that you don’t seem to understand is that the dems will hang “legitimate rape” around the throats of every single Republican running for office...up to and including Romney and Ryan.

In fact, they are already attempting to do that.

Don’t think for a moment that it won’t have an effect.

“rape.”

The most pithy and astute answer to my question on this thread.
