Missouri GOP Senate Candidate should withdraw from Race Now (Vanity)
August 19, 2012 | pistolpackinpapa

Congressman Todd Aikin, the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from Missouri should withdraw from the Missouri Senate Race immediately over his stupid statement he made today re: "legitimate rape". To not do so, will assure six more years for Claire McKaskill in the U.S. Senate. What he said, in essence, when asked about abortion, was that a "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy. Now, that comment is going viral over the internet.

I witnessed, first-hand, in 1990 how a "rape gaffe" by GOP candidate for Governor of Texas, Clayton Williams, who had a wide lead in the polls at the time, caused him to lose the Governor's Office to Ann Richards; in GOP-Red Texas.

Many of us Conservatives understand what he was saying and are in agreement. But, it was a stupid thing to say. For the sake of this Election and control of the U.S. Senate, Aikin should withdraw immediately or "Turn out the lights; the party's over.

Give Akin 48 hrs to see if he can turn this around. If not, he must withdraw and have the party nominate Steelman. A female candidate is exactly the right antidote.

So a Torricelli move might be necessary.

I am sure Akin is an honorable man and I admire his ACU rating. But his judgment is horrible. This wound was entirely self-inflicted and demonstrates an inability to keep his damned mouth shut. This gaffe suggests that more may be forthcoming.

And keep Akin away from Tampa. Not a single photo w R-R or any other candidates. Yank his plane ticket.

WE DESERVE better than this. We MUST have this seat. Period, end of subject.

I’m a conservative and every election is always about abortion, among other issues. I don’t switch off my beliefs just because some jackass political consultant decides that issue isn’t “trending” today.

I am not going to throw this guy under the bus because of one misspoken word. It’s liberals who shallowly judge people by the words they use and refuse to take into account their meaning, context, or intent. That’s what political correctness is all about.

There’s a certain segment of FReepers who will do anything to get rid of those filthy tea partiers.

Never forget, Moderates are lying, manipulative, bottom feeding scum.

“You’re an idiot. Jeez, sometimes I want to withdraw from life because of people like you. Put your big boy pants on and grow up.”

What is going on is that this guy is the one that beat the candidate that was endorsed by Palin.

This group of dramatic-chipmunks sees a shallow opportunity to try to knock off this guy and maybe get him replaced by the candidate they thought should have been the primary winner. So they are demanding that he leaves the race.

Really cheap stunt.

A quick “I mispoke” will take care of it.

Ya think? Tell some woman, in a crowd at a party, that she’s fat, ugly and her breath stinks. Then say: “Oh I misspoke” and see how well that will “take care of it”. Reminds me of the old song that has the line in it that says: “......with a hasty word you can’t recall.”

To remind folks, Akin did NOT say what Claytie Williams did in Texas. Williams said (albeit jokingly in comparing rape to inclement TX weather), “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.”

If you want to fire this guy over a 38 second sound bite, you’re going to fire anyone over anything.

Not standing up for him would signal to the Demonrats that we are pansies who will fold like a cheap suit over any screaming accusation.

Dana Loesch, a woman, said it best when she said Akin failed a sound bite, whereas McCaskill failed us on the economy over six years. McCaskill’s actions are far, far worse.

We need to get a spine, not a noodly back.

On what planet? He's a REPUB, remember?

Just don’t let it be ‘Maccaca’d’ by the media.

Too late for that, the second the STUPID words were out of his STUPID mouth.

I’m sure that if he resigned and withdrew from the race, the Republican Party of Missouri would have the right to substitute another candidate.

The problem being Aikin is spending a lot of his time saying "What I really meant was...". This cuts into the time where he can get his message on the economy and jobs and defense out there.

Then please ask Mitt Romney to step down because of all the time he's spending explaining why he's not releasing his taxes. Well over half of all the mentions of Romney I hear about on the MSM for the last month seem to be about his tax returns.

Akin was talking about a highly relevant issue to voters, abortion. By explaining his comments, he can easily let people know what his views are on abortion, which should play well in his state. Romney's tax return issue is a total vacuum sucking oxygen out of his campaign and offering absolutely no benefit in return.

Doubtful.

Just don’t let it be ‘Maccaca’d’ by the media.

If that could be done George Allen would be in the Senate today.

Im sorry I missed the moment when they held a gun to his head and made him say the most stupid thing possible in a campaign... Put this one in the Dems column....

This race is NOT about abortion, except in the eyes of the media and McCaskill.....but there is medical thinking that if a female is a virgin and is raped, pregnancy is rare on a once only occurrence.

That being said, only the media is concerned with Todd Aiken's view on abortion not the voters.

I’m not the idiot, you’re the idiot beandog; or else you’re in severe denial. Did you not read what I said about the 1990 Governor’s Race in Texas? Care to put some money on this? I’ll bet you whatever you wanna bet. By the way, go ahead and withdraw from life; nobody would give a crap.

I say give him 48 hrs. The larger issue is that if he made this horrific mistake, there are others yet to come.

Not ready for prime time.

We can all bitch and complain that the rules are different between Ds and Rs - a continual double standard.

Well that’s too bad. We can either be principled and lose; or we can pull the plug and win w Steelman. A female candidate is the perfect antidote.

We DESERVE better than this. The control of the Senate is more important than Akin’s career path.

McCaskill has a fortune to spend, and we’ve just let her back in the game. Akin cannot self-fund, either.

I agree that he mispoke. It sounded to me like he just meant that it is not that easy to get pregnant. I know that it only takes one time to risk getting pregnant, but there is also a huge part of our population that tries for years to get pregnant and can’t. I think he just had a poor choice of words and needs to explain himself a little bit better. Statistics are on his side.

Not bad.

His opponent, like all Dems, has the abortionist vote locked up. Championing free, tax supported abortions for rape isn’t going to get her any more votes.

I agree, he did misspeak and he has already quickly apologized. He meant to address the issue of pregnancies resulting from forced rapes as contrasted with pregnancies resulting from statutory (but “consensual”) rapes. Pregnancies from the former are relatively rare but from the latter not at all rare.

In any case, he needs to focus his campaign on economic issues and the McCaskill/Obama record of non accomplishment.

Unfortunately, his un-artful choice of subjects/words can be used against him if he and his campaign is not careful. And they will be used against him not least by those in this forum who secretly hope that McCaskill is reelected. Come on folks, you know you’re here and we know (by their works ye shall know them) you’re here.
