“Legitimate rape” became a Twitter trending topic in the U.S. this afternoon after liberal blog Talking Points Memo posted a video of Rep. Todd Akin claiming that victims of “legitimate rape” are unlikely to become pregnant.

Even if he used the term “legitimate rape” as the opposite of false rape claims, that was still a stupid comment.
On both sides of the aisle, the American political class is increasingly composed of people too stupid to make it in private industry - if the report on what this guy said is true, he’s a prime example.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Main issue in a forcible rape is not resulting pregnancy. The main issues are physical abuse and mental torture forced upon the victim. Pregnancy has medical solutions, mental trauma does not have easy solutions.
He was responding to a question "what about in the case of rape". That doesn't make it any less stupid.
Poor choice of words which well may hound him to defeat!
