Politics: An administration that doesn't want layoff notices required by law going out days before the November election is telling defense contractors they don't have to send them for the cuts required by sequestration.
As the heads of major defense contractors Lockheed Martin, EADS North America, Pratt & Whitney and Williams-Pyro testified recently before the House Armed Services Committee, they are bound by law to give employees 60 days' notice if their jobs are going to be terminated as a result of sequestration cuts scheduled for Jan. 2.
Federal law under the WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice) Act required employers to give workers a minimum of 60 days notice before potential mass layoffs.
That means layoff warning notices could go out to hundreds of thousands of workers just days before the presidential election, a prospect President Obama and his administration do not relish.
Some $500 billion in defense-spending reductions are scheduled to kick in beginning Jan. 2.
These cuts come on top of $487 billion in Defense Department cuts recently approved and threaten to not only to put our national security in jeopardy but also gut the skilled workforce in the aerospace industry.

If these companies are smart, they’d send out the notices REQUIRED by law and paid no heed to advice from Obama’s political appointees.

Exactly. The waiver won’t save them from lawsuits.
If sequestration does happen and Northrop Grumman lays me off without the required 60 day notice I will be suing them and Federal govt. Any of my fellow Freepers who work for Defense Contractors shoud do the same if it happens to you also.

This is a double edged sword...damned if you do as required by law, damned if you don't if this pack of thieves were to get re-elected.
If it were me I would err on the side of sending the notices pursuant to federal law.
Labor Dept. doesn’t have the authority to excuse companies from the WARN Act.
It would be an insufficient defense against employee lawsuits.
Hey, how about instead of cutting the defense let’s just cut Obama. It would save our country trillions.
How does this not bite him in the as$...Instaed of risking alienating thousands of those being laid off, he is going to alienate all of them as they sit on pins and needles waiting to find out if they get the door.

I work in the industry and there’s been quite a bit of talk about this around the water cooler. 0bama screwed up - they should have just let the contractors issue the layoff notices. The attempt to hide what’s going on for political gain is a much bigger story.
Well, the Executive Branch can pick and choose what laws really need to be enforced. It says so in the modern “flexible” interpretations of the Constitution, that ever-changing piece of paper.

Exactly. Did Barack The Great really think this would go unnoticed? Workers in the defense industry follow budget issues closely since their fate is tied up in them.
Must be nice to be able to pick and choose which laws you’re going to obey and which to ignore - the way our president, sworn to uphold the constitution and all its laws, has been doing for three and a half years.......
Would like to try to agree with you, but it's hard to imagine any usage of this, vis-a-vis political ads or political rhetoric, coming out of the Romney campaign...
