By The Second Album Steve was able to pay proper tribute to his icon Ray Charles, and again the maturity of his musical chops at such a young age are remarkable. While Ray customarily performed this signature song on the Hammond organ, Steve couldn't afford one of his own and couldn't borrow one for the recording session, so he improvised the arrangement on piano and the result was stellar.

With the group's first number one single "Keep On Running", money from this success allowed Steve to buy his own Hammond B-3 organ and the band recorded several Winwood penned instrumentals that weren't included on the first three Spencer Davis albums, but were preserved and released on later compilations. Steve's a happy camper behind the massive double keyboard on this jumpin' jazzy blues and his joy is infectious.

Guitarest Bobby Parker's "Watch Your Step" (1961) was probably the templete for The Beatles' "I Feel Fine" which became a smash hit in 1964. Spencer Davis covered the original on their Second Album released in January 1966.

In 1966, recording techiniques were still rather primative, but Stevie spent a lot of time in the studio experimenting which resulted in some outstanding quad-tracked masters. Here he plays organ, percussion and bass. This was released decades after Steve had left the Spencer Davis Group on his Finer Things compilation album, but still he gives them credit. In the 80s, he would release two mega-successful solo albums performed entirely by himself playing all the instruments, so this was just a practice run in the stone-age of studio recording.

I'll be back tomorrow to finish up Steve's Spencer Davis stint and move on to his work as a founder of the bands Traffic and Blind Faith, his stellar solo career and his session work with multiple artists including The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jim Capaldi, Robert Palmer, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, Christine McVie and the Supergroup GO with Stomu Yamashta, former Return to Forever guitarest Al Di Meola, German bassist Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream), and drummer Michael Shrieve (Santana). If I have time I'll post some of the songs from the three night stand with Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden as well. Stay tuned.
