Lincoln wasn’t quite correct in saying Jackson rose after Clay. Andrew Jackson was the first Congressman from Tennessee when it became a state in 1796 (Clay was born in 1777 so he wasn’t even old enough to be elected to Congress then) and Jackson served in the US Senate in 1797. Of course Jackson becomes a major figure only after the battle of New Orleans in 1815, whereas Clay was one of the War Hawks who helped bring on the War of 1812.
Yep. Jackson should not have technically been in that list of names. One could probably forgive Lincoln’s lack of knowledge of Jacksons very early political activity though since Jackson served so briefly from a brand new state...two years as a rep and resigned his senate seat after his first year
