A GOP senator on the short list to be Mitt Romney's running mate is applauding President Obama's move to forgo deportations for some illegal immigrants.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said the more lenient policy is "welcome news" for those immigrants who will benefit, though he was quick to knock the administration for acting unilaterally.
“Today’s announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem," the Cuban-American Rubio said in a statement. "And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one.”
Rubio's comments are a stark contrast to those coming from other Republicans, who are blasting the new rules as a threat to U.S. jobs and possibly illegal.
Rubio's remarks also further complicate the position of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who took a hard conservative stance against illegal immigrants amid the heat of the GOP primary but is now searching for ways to soften that stance in order to appeal to Hispanic voters, who will be vital in a number of swing states.

Who knew! Senor Rubio loves the power and government structure of Fidel.
It doesn't contradict itself, it correctly senses the nuanced in Rubio's comments and takes into consideration his stated position on the issue.
I found his criticism of Obama's illegal methods half hearted, personally.

We favor a moratorium on immigration to these United States, except in extreme hardship cases or in other individual special circumstances, until the availability of all federal subsidies and assistance be discontinued, and proper security procedures have been instituted to protect against terrorist infiltration.
We also insist that every individual group and/or private agency which requests the admission of an immigrant to the U.S, on whatever basis, be required to commit legally to provide housing and sustenance for such immigrants, bear full responsibility for the economic independence of the immigrants, and post appropriate bonds to seal such covenants.
The Constitution Party demands that the federal government restore immigration policies based on the practice that potential immigrants will be disqualified from admission to the U.S. if, on the grounds of health, criminality, morals, or financial dependence, they would impose an improper burden on these United States, any state, or any citizen of these United States.
We oppose the provision of welfare subsidies and other taxpayer-supported benefits to illegal aliens, and reject the practice of bestowing U.S. citizenship on children born to illegal alien parents while in this country.
We oppose any extension of amnesty to illegal aliens. We call for the use of U.S. troops to protect the states against invasion.
We oppose bilingual ballots. We insist that those who wish to take part in the electoral process and governance of this nation be required to read and comprehend basic English as a precondition of citizenship. Mr. Rubio seems to be more concerned with illegals than he is with unemployed Americans.

I’m sorry, but I don’t believe you when you say Rubio is just doing this for politics. I have not trusted him for a while, though can’t remember what it is about him that made me doubt him. This just confirms my doubts.

I completely agree. But the population issue is merely a tactic in the attempt to overthrow this nation. Obama's utter disregard of the rule of law and the separation of powers is also part of it.
But screaming about this issue, as though the biggest problem is a bunch of Mexicans taking low wage jobs, is to fail to make the larger point. The republic is under attack. I can imagine David Axelrod cackling in some strategy office because the right, in a thinly veiled racism, is bellowing about Mexican children getting amnesty while missing the point that precedent upon precedent for ignoring due process is being established.
I was already unnerved by Rubio’s “Dream Act” support.
This speech, plus Rubio’s weasel worded support for Obama’s amnesty, absolutely breaks it for me.

In my lifetime, we've had Roe v. Wade in the 70’s, Civil Rights decisions in the 60’s that paved the way for Affirmative Action and Forced Busing, and the Warren Court in the 1950’s.
The ONLY way to prevent a new avalanche of Hard Left judges is to elect Conservatives at every level of government.
Without a popular majority, that is not going to happen.

I’m not so sure that we disagree on that much my FRiend. At least not on the big picture problem. Yes, the Constitution has been under attack for at least a hundred years. And, since I have reached the ripe old age of 60, I have also seen all the whittling away at the Founder’s dream firsthand. We both agree that the Republic is under attack.
It is true that the election of genuine conservatives is the best way to resolve the problems. But I have come to the conclusion that it is not the Hispanic vote that makes the difference. Yes, that is a hard core belief of the left, echoed with fear by the right. And clearly those numbers can cause a tipping point. But the real problem with the electorate lies in the middle.
The middle, the so-called moderates or even independents, have tacked left for decades. We have allowed the press to paint the right as stupid, racist, xenophobic killjoys who don’t have one whit of concern for their fellow man as they go about each day simply looking for ways to maximize their personal wealth, regardless of the cost to others. The left on the other hand is the domain of everyman, of concern for their fellow man, they care and they share. And supposedly they stand foursquare against greed and the evil rich.
Of course those caricatures are patently false, but the moderates (and many independents) lean left in their concern with being perceived as stupid and inhumane yahoos. As a result, even the Republicans repeatedly wind up with candidates who are inarticulate spokesmen for the morality of liberty,, personal initiative and free enterprise. Even those who run to the right in the primaries come up short as the supposedly moderate electorate and the inside-the-beltway party leadership continue to believe that drawing real contrasts between the right and left is lethal in the general election. So we get candidates who don’t draw the distinctions in a compelling way, because it is not in their DNA. Romney, Dole, Ford, even the Bushes to a degree.
But from the right, when someone like Marco Rubio steps up and argues that leniency on this specific aspect of the immigration issue is a good thing he is attacked as a “traitor” (literally, see post #9). He is labelled a RINO despite the fact that he has a 100%, perfect rating from the American Conservative Union. Those attacks, exemplified by so many comments on this thread, give ample fodder to those who would label the right as racially motivated. It is utterly absurd and completely impractical to suggest that someone is a traitor because they don’t see children as “foreign invaders.” Children who came here at the will of their parents and who, in many cases, have never known any other culture other than American.
I am not so naive as to believe that all children of illegal aliens are honor students who merely want their shot at the American dream. Of course that isn’t true. But I do know that attacking Rubio and others on this part of the immigration issue alienates many hardworking, conservative, LEGAL, Americans of Mexican descent. It plays into the strategy of those who want to paint the right as without compassion. It misses the more important point that Obama and his masters and minions are operating as if this nation were already under a dictatorship.
And it postpones the day when we can see the realization of Ronald Reagan’s dictum, “Latinos are Republican. They just don’t know it yet.”
Best comment on the thread. Somehow I think that was part of the reasoning behind Obama's executive order in the first place. Plouffe and Axelrod are toasting themselves with champagne.
