Venezuela bans private gun ownership
BBC ^ | 1 June, 2012 | Sarah Grainger

Venezuela has brought a new gun law into effect which bans the commercial sale of firearms and ammunition.

Until now, anyone with a gun permit could buy arms from a private company.

Under the new law, only the army, police and certain groups like security companies will be able to buy arms from the state-owned weapons manufacturer and importer.

The ban is the latest attempt by the government to improve security and cut crime ahead of elections in October

Venezuela saw more than 18,000 murders last year and the capital, Caracas, is thought to be one of the most dangerous cities in Latin America. 'Must do more'

Analysis Sarah Grainger BBC News, Caracas

Besides the health of President Chavez, security is the main concern for voters ahead of presidential elections in October.

While voters don't seem to hold Mr Chavez responsible for the insecurity, the situation has worsened throughout his 13 years in office.

The government's most recent statistics put the murder rate at around 48 per 100,000, although some non-governmental organisations estimate it's much higher - 60 per 100,000 in 2011, one of the highest rates in the world.

Critics say the new gun laws and other recently announced measures, like a victim's compensation fund, are just the latest in a long line of failed attempts to bolster security.

One member of the public in Caracas told the BBC: "They're killing people every day. This law is important but they need to do more, they're not doing enough now."

Hugo Chavez's government says the ultimate aim is to disarm all civilians, but his opponents say the police and government may not have the capacity or the will to enforce the new law.

This is not an attempt to increase security for the ordinary citizen. It is an attempt to increase security for the state.

At root, all gun control is enacted to ensure that the state can control its subjects, and not the other way around.

At least Chavez's government is honest about their ultimate aim.

The government can ban but how are they going to prosecute it?

Haha, you keep telling yourself that, Sarah. Would be better to get a direct quote from the fascists in charge, rather than your own pie-in-the-sky interpretation.

Chavez has gangs of street mobs with which to carry out his edicts (legal or otherwise). Ever since Jimmy C validated a stolen election in the early 2Ks Venezuela has been in a death spiral. This is just another sign.

Of course once the O got elected he immediately sucked up to Chavez.

Looks like the only difference between Chavez and Hitler will be that Hitler lived to see these tactics come to fruition.

If it can be done in Venezuela, it can/will be done here.
“We The People” need to put a stop to this from happening here and NOW!.

Looks like the one-party non-representative communist Northeast doesn't even register on the chart... or is it that horizontal grey axis-looking line just above the years?

Seriously though, there are some here in MA... just too few.

This is not an attempt to increase security for the ordinary citizen. It is an attempt to increase security for the state.

99% + of all Gun Control Laws are the security of the state.

I would consider them under the "east" line.

If you also notice after the election of Ubama in 2009 the south's numbers actually went down, despite record breaking sales. I believe that is most likely because of a string of horrific boating accidents in which those guns were irrevocably lost.

Now, watch in year the crime and death rate will go up. Just like other places that ban guns.

Send Diane Sawyer down there to do introspective stories of how a gun, just sitting on a table, can tempt a young man to commit horrible acts. Even water guns can cause severe psychological damage to young impressionable testosterone damaged brains...Oh...and replace the word “gun” with “violent instrument of racial minority oppression”.

This is preparation in advance of Chavez retiring to the inferno. The true believers among his underlings are going to go for a full-on Cuba model. This ban will just make the firing squads’ job that much easier when the time comes.

Chavez has gangs of street mobs with which to carry out his edicts (legal or otherwise).

IIRC, Chavez armed with AKs(?) and organized a civilian militia named after Simon Bolivar.

Chavez: Civilian militia should be armed full-time
